This Mother’s Day in Liverpool bring your mum along to the Shankly Hotel’s amazing roof top venue the Garden of Eden, where we are putting on a delicious Mother’s Day lunch she’s sure to remember.
The hotel developers behind The Shankly Hotel have released plans for another football legend themed hotel in Belfast.
Signature Living has revealed that they plan to develop five hotels in the northern Irish capital of Belfast with one hotel having a distinct theme of one’s of the city’s finest football players, George Best.
Founder, Lawrence Kenwright, said the hotel will take on the same template as The Shankly Hotel on Victoria St, which since opening August 2015 has become a landmark destination for football lovers all over the world.
With further dedicated tours will you take you around the beloved football ground and city which Bill cherished, the plan is to create this same complete experience at the George Best Hotel.
Talking about the George Best Hotel, Lawrence said; “we are using the knowledge that we have gleaned from The Shankly Hotel. Every room has a story of an individual that knew him.
“It’s about unearthing those stories… not so much the main life stories that everyone knows, this is about the stories you don’t know about.”
The Shankly Hotel is filled with unique, never-before-seen memorabilia which was kindly donated by the Shankly family, from Bill’s old typewriter to LFC contracts, his tracksuit and letters from fans, the George Best hotel will take on the same ilk.
The perfect site has not been chosen yet but it’s expected to be as magnificent at other Signature Living developments.
The plans have the full backing of George Best’s family who after visiting The Shankly Hotel in Liverpool, signed a contract.
Signature Living has furthermore said they plan to develop five hotels in the city of Belfast, with one other taking on the theme of Titanic due to the city being the birthplace of the ill-fated vessel.
This Belfast-based Titanic Hotel will, just like 30 James Street- Home of the Titanic in Liverpool, celebrate the ship’s history as well as the people aboard and involved in the ship as well as the building it resides.
Two sites are close to completion but founder Lawrence has other iconic landmark building in his sights.
The completion of these five unique hotels will create 500 jobs in the city across all sectors, from builders to hospitality staff, maintenance and chef’s, the creation of these hotels is hoped to further the cities tourism industry and make it a must-visit, just like Liverpool has become.
This is a hugely exciting time for Signature Living and we’re looking forward to not only seeing the building which is planned for development but to see how George Best is honoured.
You can keep up to date with the George Best hotel development and the other four hotels by following Lawrence Kenwright’s blog.
At the Shankly Hotel, we’re lucky enough to be right in the heart of Liverpool’s city centre. And that means we have some of the best theatres in the UK right on our doorstep. For those who have booked theatre tickets in Liverpool and are looking for accommodation, the Shankly Hotel offers luxurious rooms and facilities in a thriving location of the city.
If you’re still planning a stay with us, why not take a look at our guide to the fabulous theatres of Liverpool? We’re located only a short walk or taxi ride away, so we recommend spending a cosy afternoon at the theatre or making your theatre visit a glamorous night to remember.
The Everyman Theatre
Situated on one of Liverpool’s best loved streets, you’ll find the Everyman on Hope Street, between the city’s two breathtaking cathedrals and surrounded by flourishing independent businesses. After reopening in 2014, the theatre won the 2014 RIBA Stirling Prize for architecture, and with its trademark wrap-around auditorium and environmentally sustainable features, it’s easy to see why.
Renowned for its unique and creative productions, expect to see classic tales turned into plays, jazz nights in their basement Bistro and of course, their famous Rock ‘n’ Roll Christmas panto.
The Playhouse Theatre
Escape from the hustle and bustle of life with a trip to Liverpool’s traditional Playhouse Theatre. You’ll find this iconic theatre right beneath the Radio City Tower in Williamson Square.
The Grade II* listed building showcases a 19th century auditorium and 20th century front of house extension. Radiating character from its striking proscenium arch design, you’ll find yourself transported into the show from start to finish.
This Liverpool gem certainly cultivates an atmosphere. Known to show plays such as The Woman in Black and Haunting of Hill House, this is the go-to theatre for horror lovers hoping to find themselves on the edge of their seat. And for those looking for a more laid back experience.
Liverpool Empire Theatre
Seating an impressive 2348 people with the largest two-tier auditorium in Britain, Liverpool Empire Theatre is arguably the most dynamic in the city. In recent years, the theatre has played host to impressive West End favourites such as Dirty Dancing and Wicked.
With big productions ranging from musicals to ballet, the Empire is one of the city’s best venues for family entertainment all year long.
Liverpool Unity Theatre
At the unitytheatre Liverpool, expect to be swept away into the world of theatre with productions frequently showcasing the local talent of Liverpool.
The Unity describe themselves as a “small-scale theatre with big ambitions”, and we’re inclined to agree. Located off the cobbled streets of Hope Street surrounded by picturesque houses and bars, the theatre never offers anything short of creative, innovative productions that can’t be found elsewhere.
Liverpool Epstein Theatre
Formerly the Neptune Theatre, the Epstein Theatre is known for its sparkling pantomime productions, this family favourite is one that shouldn’t be missed during a visit with the kids to Liverpool.
Described by visitors as an “oldy worldy theatre”, the Epstein has managed to maintain the character of a traditional theatre while weaving in modern twists. Surrounded by Hanover Street’s bar and dining scene, expect upbeat shows and events that are perfect for a night out in the city centre.
Royal Court Theatre
If you ask a Liverpool local about the Royal court, they’re likely to tell you about a good night out. This unique theatre experience allows you to drink and dine in your seat before the show begins and enjoy drinks at your table throughout the production.
You can be certain of a fantastic auditorium, vibrant bar area and high-quality facilities at the Royal Court, which has seen significant investment over the past few years. Plans to continue the upkeep of this stunning venue are already underway.
The Lantern Theatre
The Lantern Theatre is without a doubt one of Liverpool’s most charming and quaint hidden gems. A cosy, family-run company, this venue was grown from a love for the performing arts.
You’d be unlikely to stumble across the Latern unless you were looking, but located in the Baltic Triangle, just outside of the thriving Liverpool One shopping and dining area. And though the venue is low-key, we guarantee that it’s well worth a visit.
With a cosy bar and a blend of creative productions, visitors can indulge in a range of productions, varying from local writing, acting, live music and laugh-out-loud comedy from talented performers who are ready to shine.
To start your Liverpool theatre experience with an unforgettable stay at the Shankly Hotel, our team will be happy to find the best available price for you. You can give them a call on 0151 601 8998.

What to expect

A little history of Cabaret
Unless you have been living under a rock then you must be aware of the musical Cabaret starring a very young Lisa Moneli. The bowler hat, short shorts, and suspenders are an iconic Hollywood image today.
But the origins of Cabaret can be traced to the early 16th century in France. The meaning of the word originally pointed to the venue the performance was held in. Be it a bar, restaurant or nightclub, cabaret was often performed to patrons who were enjoying another leisure activity, the performance just being the background filler.
In short, Cabaret was not as grand as a theatre performance and came just short of being classed as a concert. Cabaret was essentially the DJ of ancient times, a soundtrack to accompany your evening meal or drinks.
Book your Fabaret today
The Shankly Hotel will be hosting this Fabaret spectacular for foreseeable Fridays to come.
Make sure you have your seat booked and like Lisa sang;
“What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play. Life is a Cabaret old chum Come to the Cabaret.”
Why not surprise somebody who loves live entertainment and book a Friday night at The Shankly?
You and your party can then enjoy a fun Fabaret performance in the Bastion Bar and Restaurant and then a luxury overnight stay in one of our Bill Shankly themed hotel rooms.
Fabaret is free to attend and the curtain lifts at 20:00 pm this Friday, do you have your dancing shoes ready?

It’s an undeniable passion that Bill Shankly had for the game of football. In fact, he would probably scoff at the fact that we have just referred to football as a game. Shankly’s love for the sport ran so deep he is known for having just three great passions.
His footballing career, his darling wife Nessie and their family.
First came love, then came marriage
The pair met during Bill’s time stationed as a Corporal at RAF barracks just outside Glasgow where Nessie was working in the WRAF. They were married in 1944 and had their first child, Barbara, shortly after in 1945.
It is rumoured that despite his new-found love for Agnes, Bill couldn’t let go of his passion for football and rumour once had it that Bill took Nessie to see a Rochdale game on their anniversary, something that was however quickly discredited by Shanks himself who barked;
“Of course I didn’t take my wife to see Rochdale as an anniversary present. It was her birthday. Would I have got married in the football season? Anyway, it was Rochdale reserves.”
Nessie’s unquestioning attendance of a match for a birthday present set the pace for a future life of supporting her husband’s insatiable appetite for football.
There’s even word that Bill took Nessie to a Tranmere match as a birthday present also, this rumour was quickly quashed by Nessie who corrected “it was Accrington Stanley but it wasn’t a birthday present”.
The life of the first WAG
Nessie was a player’s wife before she became the second lady of Liverpool football.
From here Bill went on to manage Huddersfield in 1956, then came made the final move in his career to Liverpool in 1959.
Through all that Nessie was behind Bill, never complaining and resiliently supporting her husband’s unrelenting passion for football.
Whilst Bill would be out giving his all to LFC, Nessie would be at home helping raise the grandchildren. Having already brought up 2 daughters Barbara and Jeanette Nessie would also devote her time to entertaining and feeding fans of Shankly and the grounds staff of LFC.
Behind every great man, there is a great woman
After all the support Nessie gave Bill over the years, through thick and thin the couple remained a beacon of true love.
It wasn’t until 1974, 30 years after they married, that Bill decided to relinquish his greatest passion in life in favour of spending quality time wife his wife and family.
In his own words during his retirement announcement;
“I’ve been so wedded to Liverpool that I’ve taken Nessie out only twice in 40 years. It’s time she saw more of my old ugly mug”
So, in time Nessie’s utter devotion to the great man paid off. He had come to realise that even though his love for Liverpool football was strong he had a family and a wife who were missing his attentions.
After half a century of living and breathing the game, Bill Shankly relinquished his strong ties to Liverpool football and began devoting more time to his family. After all;
“There’s nobody closer to you than your own kith and kin; your own blood. I’ve got my wife, my daughters, grandchildren, and my sons in law. They’re the closest to me and I would die for them.”
Love of the People
Bill Shankly was and still, is adored by the people of Liverpool.
His dedication to the city earned him the title of honorary Scouser. Without the unyielding love and support of Nessie, his achievements would not have been possible.
Today Bill and Nessie are remembered as the couple who made people happy.
After years of tracking his successful career across the country, Nessie and the Shankly family had set up home in Liverpool. Laying down routes that would help them leave the loving legacy that they both created.
Even with the tragic passing of her one true love, Nessie was comforted in the fact that the people of Liverpool would remember Bill Shankly with such fondness and hold him in loving memory.
What the love of Bill and Ness inspired
Today at the Shankly Hotel our guests can come and learn all about the happiness Bill and Ness shared, as well love they passed onto their children and grandchildren.
The Shankly Hotel was built upon the strong family values that were made by Bill and Nessie and during their own relationship. The commitment they had to each other’s happiness filtered down into the family we all know today.
Love is always in the air at the Shankly Hotel
Love continues to be a huge part of what goes on at the Shankly Hotel, as we celebrate many happy couple’s special occasions.
Guests at the Shankly Hotel have proposed, others have said yes. Some have celebrated anniversaries of happy marriages and others have started their journey into married life in our stunning Liverpool wedding venue Eden.
Even our own Shankly Hotel Director and grandson of Bill and Nessie; Chris Carline, popped the big question to Lisa, now his intended on the Eden rooftop garden where so many happy dreams have come true.
So on Valentine’s day this year and for the rest of the year ahead, make a visit to the Shankly Hotel to celebrate some fabulous love stories from the past. Or perhaps make some lasting memories of your own.
