The Shankly Host a Reunion Dinner for the 1992 Liverpool FA Cup Winners

To celebrate 25 years since Liverpool beat Sunderland 2-0 in the 1992 Fa Cup Final, the Shankly Hotel proudly hosted a glorious reunion dinner to honour the winners.

This wonderful evening saw Liverpool captain of the day, Mark Wright, reunite with fellow players Dean Saunders who partnered Rush as a striker, midfielder Jan Molby and physio Phil Boersma, for a night of reminiscence and celebration.

A Fun Filled Evening of Football

Set within the stunning Eden venue in The Shankly Hotel, the evening included a delicious 3 course meal and a host of treats for the guests.

Highlights were shown of the historic match and a Q+A was held with the famous players, along with football themed quizzes and games.

Fans who attended were treated to photographs with the footballing legends, as well as speeches from the players.

During the night exclusive memorabilia including shirts and photographs from the day were put on auction and a raffle was held featuring brilliant prizes.

The event was attended by a range of football enthusiasts, including the next generation of Reds fans and the heroes of the club’s history.

A roaring success, the night was thoroughly enjoyed by all and was a chance for younger fans of the game to learn about the brilliant history of Liverpool FC.

The 1992 Fa Cup Final

On the 9th May 1992, Liverpool faced Sunderland in the Fa Cup Final at Wembley stadium.  Sunderland were the first second division team to appear in an FA Cup final since West Ham did so in 1980 and they had a better start to the game than Liverpool.

However, things quickly turned around when Michael Thomas chipped in a half volley in the 47th minute, with an assist from Steve McManaman.

Not long after, Dean Saunders unfortunately hit the crossbar with a header as the Reds pushed for a second goal to cement their lead.

And 20 minutes later the win was sealed when Ian Rush completed the scoring to put the team 2-0 up and became the leading goalscorer in FA Cup Finals with five.

Graeme Souness’s men emphatically lifted the trophy and it returned to Merseyside after a 73 year draught for Liverpool FC.

It was Liverpool’s fifth triumph in the competition, and would be their only major trophy under the management of Graeme Souness

Liverpool didn’t win the trophy again until nine years later.

The Shankly Hotel

Shankly - 1992 Fa cup reunion winners

The Shankly were proud to be the hosts of this brilliant evening that celebrated Liverpool Football Club’s history and the event couldn’t have been held in a more appropriate venue.

A self-confessed mini museum to the great player and manager, Bill Shankly, the hotel offers its guests an incomparable insight into his fascinating career and life.

Bill Shankly successfully transformed Liverpool football club into the fighting force we’ve known and loved.

The admiration for Bill Shankly is shared between all true football fans and taking a walk around the Bill Shankly museum in The Shankly is the stuff that dreams are made of.

We hope to host many more football themed evenings that celebrate the beautiful game.

Get Ready for the 17/18 Football Season with The Shankly Hotel

Liverpool is a proud sporting city, with a long history in the football world. This year’s football season kicks off August 12th and The Shankly Hotel is the premier destination for a first class football viewing experience.

As the home of two of football’s best and most exciting teams, Liverpool is a haven for fanatics and lovers of the beautiful game.

What to Expect from the Premier League

The fixtures for all 92 clubs in both the Premier League and the Football League were released in June, with everyone learning their opponents for the highly anticipated season.

Although dates may change to fit in with TV scheduling, Liverpool are set to face their first challenge on August 12th against Watford, before facing neighbouring rivals Manchester United in mid-October.

17/18 football season

The much-loved Merseyside Derby will take place on 9th December and Everton will travel to Anfield to take on the mighty reds. Liverpool’s away derby won’t happen until April 7th, but as always, there will be an atmosphere of excitement and friendly competition in the city on derby day.

Klopp’s team will also be looking forward to returning to the Champion’s League after three years away. To join their premier league rivals in the tournament, they will have to negotiate a play-off tie.

Meanwhile, Everton will face Stoke in their first match of the Premier League and then Manchester City a week later.

The blues finished 7th in the table in the 16/17 season and will be keen to overtake their Merseyside rivals, who finished in a cool 4th.

17/18 football season

Merseyside’s Most Talked About Transfer

17/18 football season

After many rumours and much speculation, Rooney’s return to Everton was confirmed in early July and sent the football world into a frenzy. The football forward began his career at Everton in 2004, scoring 17 goals in 77 games in his original time at Goodison Park.

After moving to Manchester United, he honed his skills and went on to become Captain of the national team. Rooney played a total of 559 times for United and scored 253 goals.

As the football season approaches and Rooney is given the full pitch to test out and brush off the dust on Merseyside soil, Liverpool waits with bated breath to see what’s in store for the blues now their prodigal son has returned.

2018 FIFA World Cup

As well as the annual season excitement, 2018 also welcomes the 21st FIFA World Cup as it takes place in Russia.

The quadrennial international football tournament is arguably the most anticipated event, with everyone from all corners of the world coming together in friendly competition to celebrate their country’s sporting talent.

64 matches will be played in 12 venues across the Eastern European country with the final taking place in the capital city of Moscow on July 15th 2018.

England is still in with a chance of qualifying after taking the top place in their group. Winning four and drawing one of their qualifying matches. The next step is the inter-confederation play-offs.

BBC to Broadcast Feature Length Documentary on the Life of Bill Shankly

Bill Shankly, Liverpool Football Club’s legendary manager, will be the subject of a new BBC feature length documentary that will hit the screens before the end of the year.

Bill Shankly was a hero to many people across the city and the film will look at his career and his goal to make Liverpool a ‘bastion of invincibility.’ Shankly: Nature’s Fire finished filming at the end of May this year and is due to air within a few months.

The Scottish manager was a true character on the streets of Liverpool and the new documentary will follow his story from start to finish, showcasing his charisma, strength, uniqueness and charm.

Shankly: Nature’s Fire

Young Bill Shankly

The film has received a great amount of support from the footballing community, with former players from Scotland and Liverpool Football Club acting as contributors. His family, fans and journalists, including Sports writer Hugh Mcillvanney and Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, have also taken part to make this the best tribute to the legend himself.

The film was two years in the making and Peter Hooton, producer of the film and lead singer of local band The Farm was determined to do the story justice.

He said: “Shankly epitomised a different set of values that I think are still admired to this day. I agreed to be involved in the making of this documentary because Shankly was my boyhood hero”.

Shankly: Nature’s Fire will feature archive footage and interviews with those who knew the man best, footage from matches and from his day to day life to give a great representation of the personality and charm that the man himself was known for.

Liverpool FC’s Hero

Bill Shankly & LFC

Bill Shankly was the saviour of Liverpool football club, he took the club from a dwindling position in Second Division to a team that had a trophy cabinet to be proud of, as well as a solid place in First Division.

His now legendary quote, “my idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually, everyone would have to submit and give in’, epitomised his attitude and determination to turn the club around.

He wasn’t always about the football, he was a stable family man who was loved by the community and his relatives alike. His grandson, Christopher Carline, credits his Nan, Bill’s wife, with the success and unfaltering determination of his Granddad. Agnes Wren Shankly supported the Scottish native through everything and is an icon and role model for the modern-day WAG.

With some of the greatest golfers coming together in close proximity to Liverpool, make sure you get your tickets to enjoy this remarkable display of golfing ingenuity at the 146th Open 2017.

The Oldest Championship in Golf

In 1860 eight men took to Prestwick St Nicholas golf course to determine who would be named the champion golfer among them. First prize was a belt fashioned from rich red Morrocan leather worth a whopping £25 pounds (over £500 to date), named the Challenge Belt.

Three rounds played over the challenging links course resulted in a win by Willie Park Senior beating his rival Old Tom Morris by just two shots. It was from here that the golf open became a tournament open to experienced players across the globe.

For over 150 years talented golfers have battled it out to be honoured the title “Champion Golfer of the Year” and the prize of the iconic Claret Jug.

sporting events Liverpool

The Claret Jug replaced the Challenge Belt in 1870 after the belt was won three times in a row by Young Tom Morris and was his for keeps.

In 1872 Morris won The Open again but the new trophy had not been ready in time to present it to him. Then in 1873 Morris’ winning streak was felled by Tom Kidd who was lucky enough to be the first player to receive the Claret Jug, Morris’ name was however engraved first upon the trophy.

Over last century and a half, the winners of The Open have entertained swarms of golf fans with riveting performances of skill and determination. This time honoured golfing competition continues to attract new comers to the sport of golf and bring crowds of spectators to 14 links courses dotted around Britain’s picturesque coastline each year.

The Open at Royal Birkdale

Situated north of Liverpool on the coast of Southport Royal Birkdale is a sweeping links course that has been carved out among towering sand dunes by three generations of golf course architects.

Royal Birkdale is recognised as the 18th best golf course in the world outside the USA, due to its excellent spectator vantage points and

The first Open Championship to be hosted in Royal Birkdale was in 1954 when winner Peter Thompson became the first Australian to lift the Claret Jug after his triumph. After this Thompson went on to win a further three Open Championships in a row.

sporting events Liverpool

A special moment in golf occurred at Royal Birkdale when Lee Trevino completed a hat-trick of victories in the space of only four weeks. Before he lifted the centenary Claret Jug in 1971, Trevino had also won the US Open and the Canadian Open.

Royal Birkdale has a reputation as being a challenging but fun course to play, set out over 6690 yards, with 18 holes and a 70 par. As with any other links course, the challenge can change with the weather, on a windy day anything of the fairway leaves a player in trouble.

This year Royal Birkdale will be hosting it’s 10th Open Championship, with 156 players heading to Southport and crowds of spectators too, the 146th Open is set to be a fabulous golfing event in 2017.

Thinking of attending The Open?

For a great family friendly day out there’s nothing like going to The Open.

If you are already a golf fan then great but The Open also looks after those who are new to the game. The biggest names in golf will be in attendance and you can catch a glimpse of your favourite player winding their way in between the dunes.

There are plenty of refreshment stalls selling delicious food and drinks as well as marvellous spectator spots where you can set up camp at any hole or tee to watch each player start or finish every hole.

Simply board the train from Liverpool Central or Moorfields bound for Southport and alight at Hillside Station. The journey has 14 stops in total (if boarding at Liverpool Central) and will take just under one hour. From Hillside station Royal Birkdale is just a 10-minute walk.

Why Liverpool Should Win the Commonwealth Games Bid

There’s no doubt about it, Liverpool is a city in love with sport.

From football to horse racing, we are lucky enough to have some of the best sporting atmosphere, teams, performers, stadiums, tributes and of course the best fans in the world.

With Liverpool’s Commonwealth Games Bid well underway and Birmingham the only other city that could stand in the way, things are looking promising.

At the Shankly Hotel it’s obvious that we are big sports fans, so we’re starting to get excited about the prospect of hosting the 2022 games.

Liverpool is the perfect stage to showcase an amazing event like the Commonwealth Games and here’s why we think our city should win the bid.

Commonwealth Games Bid

The Transformation

The organisers have gone big and bold with their plans for Liverpool, and we’re not surprised.

Everyone knows, hosting a huge sporting event like the Commonwealth Games means transformations will need to happen to accommodate for new venues and the influx of tourists and fans.

Central to Liverpool’s ambitious plans is to accelerate the transformation of the city’s world-famous waterfront and the regeneration of Bramley Moore Dock, which will be home to Everton FC’s new stadium after the event.

This would also promise to be a catalyst for regenerating and transformation of areas like Kirkdale and Vauxhall.

Anfield has also been included in Liverpool’s plans, the club’s stadium is part of a proposal that would see the competition’s opening ceremony and the rugby sevens tournament held in front of the Kop. While Goodison Park will be the venue for the boxing events.

Plus a 5,000-seat swimming arena will be built near the Albert Dock, complete with a floating 50m swimming pool.

A number of other iconic venues will also be utilised, including St George’s Hall, Stanley Park, Goodison Park and the Arena and Convention Centre.

The proposals are predicted to accelerate £1bn of investment and create 12,000 jobs.

This plan is both compelling and deliverable and will be amazing for the athletes, the spectators and the Commonwealth.

Crucially it is designed to leave Liverpool transformed.

Our Track Record of Delivering

Liverpool has hosted numerous large sporting, cultural, musical and artistic events over the years.

Nobody will ever forget the exciting treasure hunt for the Superlambanana statues which captured the city’s imagination.

Or think back to when the Giants took over he city’s streets and pulled in thousands of visitors to witness a remarkable piece of street theatre in action.

There are also the numerous music festivals such as Sound City, LIMF and many more that are planned to perfection each year.

It’s clear Liverpool has a track record of delivering world-class showpiece events and everyone in Liverpool is confident they can deliver a world-class Commonwealth Games too.

We Love Sport!

Liverpool is a city that loves sport. With a passion for football that runs deep and a host of other brilliant sporting events, without a doubt the people of Liverpool are all sports fans.

When you have two Premier League football clubs with a rich history of success, one of the world’s most renowned racecourses and a pair of golf courses on The Open hosting roster, it’s clear major sporting events have a natural home on Merseyside.

The Shankly Hotel, dedicated to one of the greatest football managers of our time, is just one example of how much the city loves its sports stars.

With a special museum dedicated to footballing memorabilia and various football themed tours that continue to be extremely popular, our Hotel is a brilliant example of the passion Liverpudlians have for great sport.

Bringing Two Great Cities Together

If Liverpool win the Commonwealth Games Bid, events won’t just be held in Merseyside.

Manchester have stepped up to the mark and offered their services and venues to help strengthen Liverpool’s bid.

Through a creative partnership, they will host T20 cricket at Manchester’s Old Trafford Cricket Ground, plus track cycling in world class velodrome.

Merging two cities that usually have a bitter rivalry, all in the name of sport, what more could you ask for.

A Stunning Backdrop

The architecture in Liverpool is internationally renowned as being some of the most beautiful in the world, with the River Mersey skyline topping any poles in the most spectacular city spaces.

Recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, this backdrop would provide the classiest of settings for any sporting event. Imagine sweeping shots of the Three Graces with all the spectacle of the medal-contention action going on before them.

Not only that, it provides some fantastic selfie backgrounds for the athletes and spectators to take home with them.

There’s no doubt that it would be an amazing display of everything that makes Liverpool great.

The Creation of a Legacy

One of the key requirements of any bid is to provide evidence of the legacy that can be created for future generations by the hosting of the event.

There has already been talk of expanding the local rail network to serve the new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock, something that will surely be required for the thousands of blues fans heading there every week when it becomes Everton’s home.

The organisers have also put forward an innovative new way of presenting the jumping events by moving them to spectacular locations along the docks.

If Liverpool host the Commonwealth Games it would trigger a huge regeneration of major areas of Liverpool that are in need of an injection of funds and the new stadiums are sure to have a legacy of sporting achievements long after the games have been and gone.

Liverpool will set the bar for how major games leave a real and tangible legacy.

Home Grown Talent Will Shine

There’s nothing like home advantage when it comes to an event of this magnitude.

By the time 2022 rolls along, we’ll have Merseyside athletes in their prime and poised to go for gold.

We already have the hugely talented Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Tony Bellew and Michael Rimmer to name but a few.

Imagine the Soundtrack

We all know Liverpool is famous for its music, so just imagine how amazing the music would be for the parade of athletes.

From The Beatles to Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Cast, The Wombats, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Zutons, The Farm, Elvis Costello or even Atomic Kitten, it would be an opening to remember.

While Birmingham is playing it safe, Liverpool are dreaming big and in our opinion that’s the only way to do it.

There is no other UK city with global relevance and profile that better embodies the core Commonwealth principles of consensus and common action, mutual respect, inclusiveness, transparency, accountability, legitimacy, and responsiveness.

The Shankly Hotel are proud to support the bid to host the Commonwealth Games, let’s hope we win and make this city even greater than it already is.
