I was a boy of 12 and had recorded Bill on This is Your Life on my cassette recorder.
I pestered my dad to take me to Bill’s house in West Derby one Sunday afternoon so that I could play him the tape.
I was dropped at the end of the road, while my mum and dad waited in the car. I walked down to Bill’s house and knocked on the door, Nessie answered, I told her I had a tape of This is your Life for Bill to listen to.
She invited me in and I was shown to the living room where Bill; in his armchair indulged my questions about the programme and his own career as a player. With the TV on in the background I was shown his This is your Life red book.
Cheekily and with microphone in hand, I asked Bill to say a few words to record for posterity my incredible afternoon. He spoke to say I was in his house and it was Bill Shankly speaking to me. I still have this fantastic recording, a reminder of a moment in time, when on one Sunday afternoon, I met my hero.
