Alma de Cuba has recently unveiled exciting new plans to install a beautiful new floor level inside the restaurant and bar to give lucky brides and grooms a unique backdrop on their special day. This amazing wedding setting in Alma de Cuba is sure to be one of the best venues to walk down the aisle in Liverpool.
A former church, Alma de Cuba is one of the city’s most popular and famous social hubs, having already won multiple awards for its unique carnival atmosphere and Cuban inspired events.
A Unique Space
The new wedding events space is set to be built above the existing mezzanine floor currently used by diners and will make use of one of Alma de Cuba’s main features, the alter. This unique facet was expertly restored when the building was renovated and will now be the main feature of the new magical wedding venue.
The first CGI images show how the new wedding floor could look with the stunning Alma de Cuba altar at the centre and glass walls enclosed around the aisle to create a private event space that is still part of the party below.
At Signature Living, its fair to say we’ve mastered the art of hosting weddings that are cherished forever.
The Shankly Hotel are proud to house the Garden of Eden that has become one of the most popular places to get married in the city and of course the stunning White Star Grand Hall over in 30 James Street.
We can’t wait to welcome Alma into the Signature family.
Returning to its Roots
Located on Seel Street, this vibrant bar was once Liverpool’s oldest Catholic Church and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.
Built in 1788 it served as a Catholic building over a period of 188 years, after it was taken over by the Polish community and renamed Our Lady of Czestochowa.
It was then converted by architects and sympathetically restored to retain many of the original features from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries including the upstairs galleries, the king post roof, the beautiful altar and the stained glass windows.
We’re planning on taking the sentimental church back to its roots by adding on a unique wedding venue to complement the current layout.
It’s a really exciting new step for the restaurant and will give it a whole new dimension, the future is looking very bright for Alma de Cuba.
In the meantime, we’d love to see you at Alma de Cuba for our array of vivid and vibrant events, ranging from our Samba Afternoon Tea to Thursday Rumba Night.
To enquire about booking a table at Alma de Cuba or for more information, you can contact our friendly team on 0151 709 1567.

When it comes to picking a winning horse at the races there’s a fine art to it. Most of us choose horses based on the name or the colour of the jockey’s silks, often there’s a lack of actual research or science behind our final decision and whenever we’ve managed to pick a winner it’s from sheer dumb luck. This year prepare yourselves and see if you two can perfect the art of “handicapping” to pick yourself a winner during Grand National weekend in Liverpool.
Art not Science
The art of picking a winning horse is called “handicapping”, using all the information at your disposal to select a horse more likely to win the race. We’ve simplified some of the basics for you below by giving you some questions to ask yourself before making a choice;
Where has the horse ran before and at what distance?
If the horse has performed well on a similar course in recent races this is a positive.
What condition was the track surface of the race previously run and is it the same as the track on the day of the race you are attending?
If not the horse may not perform the same for better or worse.
Has the horse travelled to race?
If so there is a likely hood that those involved in the shipping will be pushing the horse harder to recoup any travel expenses.
Has your horse had a holiday?
The ideal time for a break between races is between 30-45days. Any longer and the horse may need at least one run to get back in the game.
How many races has your chosen horse started in?
A good average of starts for a horse is around 13, an over raced horse may have experience but could do with a well-deserved holiday. Try and aim for lightly raced horses and watch out for the first time or new runners. These are a gamble as they could be raring to go but are also inexperienced.
Odds and Statistics
Calculating the odds of an intended bet can be quite confusing for those with little or no experience in betting and gambling.
A good thing to know is that the majority of winners are actually less than 20-1 on the morning line. Meaning the experienced odds maker has predicted the end of the day odds which are influenced by public betting throughout the day.
Check for recently beaten favourites as these are horses that can turn around their performance in later races. At the same time keep an eye out for horses that are always overbet and favoured and avoid them as they are unlikely to hold any value.
If the odds from your horses last few races were between 2-1 and 6-1 it shows money was taken from those races and the horse was expected to perform better. These horses are anticipated likely winners in their next races.
Lastly, high odds winners tend to repeat winning performances so pay attention to those that have come in winning at high prices.
Myths and Old Wives Tales
There are a few tricks that long time gamblers will always employ when taking their money to the bookmaker. We thought we’d list the top 10 superstitions and see if they help or hinder yours during Grand National weekend in Liverpool.
Bet on 10 stone Jockeys and 10-year-Old horses
Never bet on fillies against colts
Pick a horse wearing your lucky number or colour
Always pick the younger horse in a race full of old timers
Do not bet last minute
Never let another person place your bet
Grey horses for grey days
Bet on horses with Gold or Win in their names
Put your race ticket in the same pocket as your cash, money attracts money
Use the same pocket for your race tickets until you lose then change pockets.
A Sure Thing
If you’d like to learn more about how to pick a winner and what factors determine the odds, make a visit to the Grand National Premier at St George’s Hall on 5th April.

With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, we’ve decided to scrap the rule book and create the perfect package for celebrating the perks of single life with your nearest and dearest. With stunning views and a glass of bubbly in hand, it’ll be a Valentine’s Day to remember.
If you were planning on staying in, we’re sure we’ll sway your mind with our fantastic deal. What better way to spend the night than by dining in the fanciest of venues, followed by a Valentine’s visit to see Christian Grey in action?
After all, no one needs a significant other to wine and dine the night away. In true Sex and the City style, friendships can be the greatest (and often the longest!) romances of all.
What’s the plan?
On Friday 11th February starting at 6:00pm, you can join over 200 others at The Shankly Hotel’s fabulous Garden of Eden for a sit-down meal.
With a minimum of four in your group, let your glasses clink together as you toast to the night with a welcome glass of Prosecco. Before your meal, you can take in the striking views of the city from this stylish rooftop venue.
While you chat the night away, we’ll be adding a bit of flirtation to the night with cheeky butlers who will be serving you delicious dishes and cocktails!
When you’re all finished off, it’ll be time to head over to the cinema where we’ve booked tickets for the 9:00pm showing of must-see Valentine’s Day film of the year, 50 Shades Darker.
Book Your Tickets
To make sure you don’t lose out on tickets for this unmissable event, don’t forget to book your tickets ASAP. It’s only £30pp to enjoy everything on offer for this one of a kind Valentine’s Day event.

It’s been an exciting year for The Shankly Hotel. Since the doors first opened in August 2015, we have hosted some fabulous events and created some amazing memories. Here we count down our most memorable moments from The Shankly Hotel in 2016:
Liverpool’s First Autism Friendly Hotel
As part of a city-wide initiative, The Shankly Hotel proudly joined other established Liverpool companies to raise autism awareness.
Our staff members were individually trained to recognise signs that somebody may have autism. The initiative was backed by a number of schemes as well as the Autism alliance. This along with our help ensured a national audience was reached.
The Shankly Hotel were honoured to be included in such an important initiative and continue to support the plan today.
This award is voted for by genuine guest reviews, which is why we were even more pleased to have earned the title.
Customer experience is at the forefront of any Signature Living hotel. The staff at The Shankly Hotel are what make our guests experiences what they are. Therefore, we owe this award to the team for their remarkable efforts.
Our guests are also to thank for taking the time to leave such glowing reviews following their stay with the Shankly Hotel in 2016.
For this and every happy guest experience we can help create, we are grateful.
The Shankly Hotel Wins the LEP Best Newcomer Award
Imagine our delight when another prestigious industry award came our way. Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards recognised The Shankly Hotel as its Best Hotel Newcomer. All this less than 12 months from our grand opening.
Signature Living owners Lawrence and Katie Kenwright and Bill Shankly’s grandson, Chris Carline attended the ceremony. The trio accepted the award with immense pride and credited staff for their tremendous effort and making the award win possible.
The Shankly Virtual Experience
The Shankly Hotel is renowned for being a unique one of a kind accommodation experience. Bringing to our guests a Bill Shankly experience that can’t be found anywhere else.
Visitors to the Shankly Hotel in 2016 were treated to an out of this world virtual experience. Using modern technology to deliver a brand-new concept, The Shankly Hotel have created The Shankly Virtual Experience.
Diners from the Bastion Bar and Restaurant and guests at The Shankly Hotel can enjoy the virtual presence of Bill Shankly. Watch on screen as a realistic version of the man himself appears to be dining with you and your friends.
A leap into the future of hotel experiences and a new meaning to those of us who have Bill Shankly on their fantasy dinner guest lists.
The Shankly Hotel Named One of the World’s Best Football Themed Hotels
The Shankly Hotel was first and foremost created as a family friendly hotel. The values and morals passed down by of the greatest player/managers in footballing history are at the heart of all that we do.
Of course, it goes without saying that the Bill Shankly theme carried a lot more than amazing family values. The prestigious footballing career of Bill Shankly is portrayed for all to see throughout The Shankly Hotel.
Guests can enjoy an array of marvellous memorabilia, depicting a fabulous footballing past. Bill Shankly’s contribution to the game of football gave creators of The Shankly Hotel an amazing foundation on which to build such an engaging theme.
The Shankly family have provided the most amazing insight into what made Bill Shankly such an admirable man.
Shankly’s Greatest XI
In summer of 2016 The Shankly Hotel began a public vote to craft the ultimate dream team. We asked the people to choose a team to be named Shankly’s Greatest XI. Voting commenced and in one short month the greatest XI were announced.
To celebrate the a stunning evening dinner banquet took place in The Garden of Eden. Former players and families joined together to mark the contributions made by Bill Shankly to the game of football.
Players met and greeted fans who had specifically booked tickets for the event in our Baby Eden events venue. The greatest XI and representing families then enjoyed a three-course meal, live entertainment and a silent auction for some rare LFC memorabilia.
A particularly fascinating evening for us and one of our favourite memories from The Shankly Hotel in 2016.
Launch of the Shankly Tours
Bill Shankly was a Scottish man “proud to be called a scouser” and it was this sentiment that inspired us to introduce The Shankly Tours.
The Shankly Hotel tailored a fun selection of trips across Liverpool. The tours include sights and experiences that celebrate the connection Bill Shankly had with the city, it people and both football clubs.
There are football specific tours, match day tours and a combination Shankly and Fab Four Beatles tour. The city excursions have proven to be hugely popular and have made a fabulous addition to Liverpool’s tourist attractions.
We look forward to introducing further Shankly Tour options in 2017. Welcoming many more visitors to experience an alternative view of Liverpool.
The eagerly anticipated launch of our city centre rooftop venue, The Garden of Eden, was nothing short of magical.
A full list of VIP’s gathered at on the top floor of the Shankly Hotel. We were pleased to welcome members of Hollyoaks cast, The Real Housewives of Cheshire and a Liverpool football legend or two.
The Garden of Eden is the ideal city centre rooftop space for glamourous events and stunning Liverpool weddings. We were so pleased with the turn out for our official Eden Launch party.
The evening included performances from the Nazielle Danielle School of Dance, Rachel McFarlane and was hosted by Liverpool radio personality Pete Price.
Alongside our celebrities and fabulous performers were a host of whimsical theatrical characters that made the entire evening a true fairy tale full of whimsy and wonderment.
The most perfect evening of celebration introducing the most magical Liverpool events space.
The Bastion’s Pastry Chef Wins Apprentice of the Year
Signature Living are proud to have provided Liverpool’s youth with nearlyl 100 apprenticeships this year.
The ability for us to provide young people the opportunity to work in fast paced, exciting environments is only growing as we do.
We saw fantastic results of the exciting opportunities we offer at The Shankly Hotel in 2016. Our Pastry Chef Apprentice Amy Wilson was awarded Apprentice of the Year at this year’s Switch Onto Business Awards.
Just 12 month after starting her career in the kitchen, Amy has been awarded this prestigious accolade. Her efforts have also impressed her mentor and our executive head chef Matt Cox.
“Amy is innovative, will try anything, experiments and has lots of great ideas… I would put her up there with one of the best apprentices I have ever worked with in 20 years of catering.”
We are sure there’s more to come from Amy and from the other hardworking individuals we have welcomed into the Signature Living family.
Signature’s Grotto at The Garden of Eden
What’s one thing that makes any child’s Christmas wishes complete? A visit to see Santa in Signature’s Grotto.
When we teamed up with One Magical City, we wanted to create the perfect winter wonderland so children in Liverpool could meet the man in red.
Our roof top venue, The Garden of Eden, was transformed into Santa’s Liverpool hideaway. We invited children up to the top floor of the Shankly Hotel, to give Santa their Christmas list. Each little one also collected themselves an early Christmas present.
Signature’s Grotto provided fabulous views across the city for those who were waiting to see Santa. Giving the children who attended a truly memorable Christmas Grotto experience.
TOWIE at The Shankly Hotel
The annual TV favourite, The Only Way is Essexmas, has become a popular UK Christmas TV staple.
We were over the moon when the cast of TOWIE descended upon Liverpool to film the special episode with us.
Cast members Chloe Sims, Danielle Armstrong, John Clark, Tommy Mallet, Georgia Kousoulou and couple Megan McKenna and Pete Wicks were here.
Each cast member enjoyed an evening in one of our luxury suites. The glamorous ladies even treated themselves to a well-deserved glass of bubbly and delicious afternoon tea in The Bastion Bar and Restaurant.
Keep an eye out this Essexmas for scenes filmed at The Shankly hotel in 2016.
Magical Wedding Show at the Garden of Eden
To celebrate the launch of the newest Liverpool wedding venue, The Garden of Eden, our wedding team at the Shankly Hotel organised a wonderful Eden Wedding Show. The first of many to come.
The Shankly Hotel opened it’s doors to happy brides and grooms inviting them int to imagine how their special day could be spent with us.
The event was a screaming success and all who attended had access to the best local suppliers. We even hosted a glamorous fashion show complete with catwalk and models clad in wedding day attire.
Our guests and the team involved participated in the internet craze the Mannequin Challenge. An all-round fantastic day was had by staff and guests. The first Wedding Show of many more spectacular events we look forward to hosting at The Garden of Eden.

In particular, we’d like to thank our guests with whom we look forward to helping make more magical memories at The Shankly Hotel in 2017.
