At the Shankly Hotel in Liverpool we were delighted to play host to inspiring couple Katie and Sam, who stayed with us over the Merseyside Derby weekend.
When tragedy struck in January 2016, Katie was left with a long recovery journey ahead. However, the unfortunate twist of fate didn’t hold Katie back; after making an inspiring recovery, we wanted to lend a small helping hand on behalf of Bill Shankly himself.
Katie’s Inspiring Story
In January 2016, Katie was making her way to work when she found herself faced with treacherous black ice. When her car skidded along the ice and tragically hit a tree, the accident caused significant injuries.
Thankfully, Katie’s local air ambulance team were able to airlift her to the major trauma unit in Plymouth, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with a severe head injury.
3 weeks after being moved to a ward, Katie suffered a further setback; she required emergency surgery to her abdomen, meaning an extra three weeks on the Intensive Care Unit.
As time passed, Katie was transferred to a neuro rehabilitation unit where she was faced with the harrowing task to learn to walk, talk and regain her independence. After a turbulent time away from home, Katie was finally discharged home on the 28th April 2016.
A Miraculous Recovery
The brave Primary Education student was completing the third year of her degree when the accident struck. Defying the odds, Katie has been able to return to studying, amazingly picking up her degree where she had left off.
Prior to the accident, Katie had bought tickets to take her boyfriend to watch the Liverpool v Sunderland match in February for his birthday.
A passionate LFC fan, Sam had never been to a home match before and the couple were devastated when their plans fell through. Katie and Sam were unable to attend the match as Katie had been readmitted to Intensive Care that weekend.
When Katie’s friend got in touch with Shankly Hotel Director and Bill’s Grandson Chris, to share her story, Liverpool Football Club stepped in to offer two tickets for Katie and Sam to attend the Merseyside Derby.
As the couple were in search of accommodation, we were delighted to welcome them to stay at the Shankly for two nights to top off their weekend with an extra touch.
We’re so pleased that Katie and Sam had an enjoyable stay with us at the Shankly Hotel. Bill Shankly was a man of the people and we always aim to celebrate his character and outstanding morals.
We would love to see Katie and Sam again soon and wish Katie the best of luck with her surgery coming up in May!

When it comes to picking a winning horse at the races there’s a fine art to it. Most of us choose horses based on the name or the colour of the jockey’s silks, often there’s a lack of actual research or science behind our final decision and whenever we’ve managed to pick a winner it’s from sheer dumb luck. This year prepare yourselves and see if you two can perfect the art of “handicapping” to pick yourself a winner during Grand National weekend in Liverpool.
Art not Science
The art of picking a winning horse is called “handicapping”, using all the information at your disposal to select a horse more likely to win the race. We’ve simplified some of the basics for you below by giving you some questions to ask yourself before making a choice;
Where has the horse ran before and at what distance?
If the horse has performed well on a similar course in recent races this is a positive.
What condition was the track surface of the race previously run and is it the same as the track on the day of the race you are attending?
If not the horse may not perform the same for better or worse.
Has the horse travelled to race?
If so there is a likely hood that those involved in the shipping will be pushing the horse harder to recoup any travel expenses.
Has your horse had a holiday?
The ideal time for a break between races is between 30-45days. Any longer and the horse may need at least one run to get back in the game.
How many races has your chosen horse started in?
A good average of starts for a horse is around 13, an over raced horse may have experience but could do with a well-deserved holiday. Try and aim for lightly raced horses and watch out for the first time or new runners. These are a gamble as they could be raring to go but are also inexperienced.
Odds and Statistics
Calculating the odds of an intended bet can be quite confusing for those with little or no experience in betting and gambling.
A good thing to know is that the majority of winners are actually less than 20-1 on the morning line. Meaning the experienced odds maker has predicted the end of the day odds which are influenced by public betting throughout the day.
Check for recently beaten favourites as these are horses that can turn around their performance in later races. At the same time keep an eye out for horses that are always overbet and favoured and avoid them as they are unlikely to hold any value.
If the odds from your horses last few races were between 2-1 and 6-1 it shows money was taken from those races and the horse was expected to perform better. These horses are anticipated likely winners in their next races.
Lastly, high odds winners tend to repeat winning performances so pay attention to those that have come in winning at high prices.
Myths and Old Wives Tales
There are a few tricks that long time gamblers will always employ when taking their money to the bookmaker. We thought we’d list the top 10 superstitions and see if they help or hinder yours during Grand National weekend in Liverpool.
Bet on 10 stone Jockeys and 10-year-Old horses
Never bet on fillies against colts
Pick a horse wearing your lucky number or colour
Always pick the younger horse in a race full of old timers
Do not bet last minute
Never let another person place your bet
Grey horses for grey days
Bet on horses with Gold or Win in their names
Put your race ticket in the same pocket as your cash, money attracts money
Use the same pocket for your race tickets until you lose then change pockets.
A Sure Thing

Haye V Bellew
Set to be an unforgettable night, we’ll certainly be rooting for Liverpool’s very own Tony Bellew when he takes to the ring. The Merseyside athlete grew from being a three-time ABA heavyweight champion, to making his professional boxing debut in October 2007.
One of the most intense grudge fights in modern British boxing history, Saturday will showcase the ongoing feud that everybody’s talking about. To say that the pair have “bad blood” is an understatement; the hype surrounding the fight was taken to a new level at Thrusday’s press conference when the two came head to head. While Haye issued a series of threatening remarks, Bellew shared:
“Nearly time to rock and roll. Lets see what happens. The main thing is no excuses. They have been put out to the media. We all get sore, we all get knocks and bumps. This is the combat business, it’s called boxing.”
Liverpool V Arsenal
Liverpool V Arsenal is also expected to provide plenty of entertainment. If Liverpool win tomorrow’s game then it will be their 50th home league win over Arsenal, so we have our fingers crossed that they’re ready!

What to expect
A fabulously fun night of free entertainment including live performances of sultry soul and funky Motown. For the movie lovers among you, there will even be a tribute to Bond films of old and new and a spot of Disney magic to round off a night of superb live entertainment.
A little history of Cabaret
Unless you have been living under a rock then you must be aware of the musical Cabaret starring a very young Lisa Moneli. The bowler hat, short shorts, and suspenders are an iconic Hollywood image today.
But the origins of Cabaret can be traced to the early 16th century in France. The meaning of the word originally pointed to the venue the performance was held in. Be it a bar, restaurant or nightclub, cabaret was often performed to patrons who were enjoying another leisure activity, the performance just being the background filler.
In short, Cabaret was not as grand as a theatre performance and came just short of being classed as a concert. Cabaret was essentially the DJ of ancient times, a soundtrack to accompany your evening meal or drinks.
Book your Fabaret today
The Shankly Hotel will be hosting this Fabaret spectacular for foreseeable Fridays to come.
Make sure you have your seat booked and like Lisa sang;
“What good is sitting alone in your room? Come hear the music play. Life is a Cabaret old chum Come to the Cabaret.”
Why not surprise somebody who loves live entertainment and book a Friday night at The Shankly?

Take a walk back in time and explore Liverpool’s history by learning about what helped shape the exuberant waterfront architecture and early wealth of the city.
Liverpool’s position on the Mersey River made city docks the hub of UK trade from overseas. Goods such as tobacco, spices, cotton and Gin flowed through Liverpool bringing extreme wealth and prosperity to the area.
This wealth was also built on the sale of humans as goods at the peak of slave trading.
In what was once known as the ‘Slave Trade Triangle’ Liverpool played a crucial role.
The port of Liverpool served as the beginning and end point for a staggering three-quarters of the slaving ships coming to and from Africa and the Caribbean.
There are traces of this sad part of Liverpool’s history all around us, in the artwork found on the cities most prominent buildings and monuments.
Eric shares this wealth of knowledge with those partaking in the walkign city tour.
Another huge part of Liverpool’s interesting history is football.
Evident in the numerous tours in operation that ferry visitors around the two major premier league football stadiums and training grounds in the city.
We recommend another way to explore the unique footballing history of Liverpool with our Shankly Experience tour.
Take a journey with the Shankly Family Foundation and learn how the power of one man transformed a football club and stirred inspiration across a city of people.
Pioneering the ‘Liverpool way of play’, Bill Shankly made the city famous through football. Because of his efforts at LFC, his working-class background and outstanding moral compass, the people of Liverpool loved him.
His character was admired by many, known as a stand-up family man dedicated only to his wife, children and the game of football.
During a visit to the Shankly Hotel take a chance to explore a piece of Liverpool’s history through various displays of Shankly memorabilia.
Never before seen iconic items donated by the Shankly family can be viewed, such as rare photos and his own training tracksuit. This, as well as handwritten letters and tactics notes, give visitors a keen insight into the mind and life of the great man.
Why not book an exclusive training session on Shankly playing field to see where Bill Shankly worked and played during his Liverpool career?
Participants can enjoy running drills fashioned from handwritten notes taken from Shankly archives and learn to understand the ethos of Bill Shankly; that you can play hard as long as you work harder.
You can even play in and keep a limited-edition training kit as a memento.
The Shankly Tours and training experiences are bookable here and are a unique way to explore Liverpool’s history from a different perspective.
Williamson Tunnel tours
There are some magnificent sights across Liverpool city centre.
The Three Graces, The Anglican and Metropolitan Cathedrals and Albert Dock are all stunning pieces of Liverpool history…above ground.
How about what lies beneath the city?
In 1995 a series of tunnels were discovered by a university student beneath the streets of Liverpool. Since then these tunnels have been slowly excavated by volunteers.
The tunnels are the work of a wealthy tobacco baron, Joseph Williamson. After building what were known to have been grand mansions of unconventional design, Williamson moved onto constructing his obscure series of underground tunnels.
His reasons behind constructing these tunnels remain unknown but have been widely speculated upon.
Theories include Williamson’s involvement in a religious sect, convinced the apocalypse was looming. The tunnels, therefore, built as a post-apocalyptic haven for Williamson, his family and friends.
Others suspected Williamson of being involved in smuggling using the tunnels to transport goods across the city undetected.
A popular explanation is that Williamson’s tunnels were built to employ hundreds of soldiers returning from the Napoleonic war.
It seems construction carried on for 70 years and ceased immediately after Williamson’s death.
Now the Joseph Williamson Society are exploring this mysterious piece of Liverpool’s history concealed within these fascinating underground structures. You too can explore the Labyrinth as part of a guided tour and check out the progress of ongoing excavation.
