The Shankly Hotel Reviewed in OK! Magazine

This month, we’re delighted to be featured in Ok! Magazine. The best-selling publication have written a glowing review, and we’re so pleased that they enjoyed their visit, we thought we’d share some of the highlights.

The Shankly Hotel Review by OK!

Ok! praised our fantastic location, noting that we’re a five-minute walk from famous Mathew Street – home of the world famous Cavern Club.

The Shankly Hotel is also within walking distance of Liverpool ONE high-street shops and designer brands, as well as the city’s top theatres and bars and restaurants.

The Shankly Hotel

The Ok! team also raved about the unique style of our fabulous rooms and suites, adding:

“The rooms are huge- more than double the size of the average hotel room! Ok! loved our luxury studio and enjoyed pumping our tunes through the Bluetooth speaker system as we sipped some fizz. The suites are perfect for getting the party started ahead of a night out, and with multiple beds, a 50in TV screen a Jacuzzi, they’re also the perfect slumber party set-up.”

At The Shankly, we certainly aren’t afraid to do things differently. While our original rooms are in keeping with the hotel’s classically stylish theme, our party rooms are given a sprinkle of eccentricity with dazzling interior details and stylish contemporary features.

Ok! wrote:

“It’s the perfect base for a girlie weekend away and boasts an eccentric but stylish interior.”

The vibrant party rooms and suites within The Shankly have been a hit with our celebrity guests. Peaky Blinders star Tom Hardy is one of the most famous faces to have enjoyed a visit to The Shankly.

Plus, Love Island stars Cara De La Hoyde and Chris Hughes are some of our most recent hotel guests. Cara joined us for a girlie hen party celebration, while Chris chose to stay for Aintree races weekend.

Dine at The Bastion Bar & Restaurant

The review also noted that TOWIE filmed their Christmas special in Liverpool, with cast members enjoying a stay in our suites and dining at the hotel’s Bastion Bar & Restaurant.

The OK! team also had the chance to try some of our delicious dishes, writing:

“OK! tucked into the goats’ cheese crotin and the spinach and ricotta tortellini. The hotel’s in-house mixologist is always on hand to create cocktails, including their signature gin and tonis. The restaurant also offers afternoon tea and a freshly prepared buffet breakfast.”

The Bastion Bar & Restaurant is the perfect spot to enjoy a family meal, drinks with friends or special celebration, whether it’s a romantic anniversary, graduation gathering or birthday.

Guests at The Bastion can admire an exclusive collection of Bill Shankly memorabilia items, including his original LFC contract, personal typewriter and letters. Memorabilia is provided by the Shankly family, who work with us to provide guests with the best possible experience.

Pool Parties in Liverpool at The Shankly

Ok! finished their review with a reference to our award-winning Laurent Perrier pool room, writing:

“Live the high life in the hotel’s Laurent Perrier pool room. The champagne-inspired room sleeps up to 24 guests in 12 lavish wooden curtained cabins surrounding a mosaic swimming pool. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate!”

Here’s How & Why We Celebrate National Pie Week at The Shankly

There aren’t many sports that have their own designated food group. Think Wimbledon’s strawberries and cream or the US Superbowl and chicken wings. For British football, the dish of choice is the humble pie and during national pie week 2018 from the 5th of March, The Shankly Hotel will be putting on a great offer.

Why do pies and football go so well together?

Perhaps no surprise that the oldest sport in the country has adopted one of the oldest snacks in the country as its symbolic dish.

Pie and football - national pie week

The history of pies and football can be traced back over a century with various recorded incidents surrounding the humble pie appearing at some of the earliest matches.

The notorious chant “who ate all the pies?” is said to have been inspired by William Foulke, a 20 stone Sheffield goalie whose own fans used to sing the tune him due to his enormous size.

Others will tell the tale of Micky Quinn, the famous eighties striker who, after having a pie thrown at him by a fan, picked it up and devoured it.

So strong is the connection between pies and football that only ten years ago a man travelled the country vowing to eat a pie in every UK football stadium. He succeeded by eating a whopping 92 pies and even penned a book about his experiences entitled . . . wait for it . . . “92 Pies”.

As with football it only seems proper to rate all the pies in the league and place them in their very own league chart.

Thanks to pie experts PIERATEERS such a thing already exists and low and behold the top team pie can be found at Morecambe and is a classic steak and ale wonder.

Liverpool, however, cannot be found on the league table at all! The shock of it.

Hombaked Anfield

Turns out the history of the humble pie is strong at Anfield. Some even say that the current cooperative bakery that supplies Liverpool and away fans with their staple match snack was inspired by the kindness of Shankly himself.

Homebaked was once Mitchell’s, the bakery that supplied the community and countless match goers with their staple football snack for nearly a century. After closing in 2010 it was sorely missed, which prompted locals to reopen the bakery and run it themselves.

Now on any given match day the cues at Homebaked stretch out the door and around the block as it has become custom to purchase a pie too:

  1. a) keep your hands warm during the game
  2. b) support the local community.

Many believe that Homebaked was inspired by Shankly and that could be why their signature pie is aptly named, The Shankly Pie made with steak, bacon, mushroom and onion and a touch of gravy.

Today Homebaked use their massive match day profits and any other profit to help educate and train their bakers and hold classes and courses and any food left over goes towards help in the local area such as food banks and homeless shelters.

Why not pop in and support them on your next visit to a match day at Anfield?
