Did Shankly Ever Play in The World Cup?

The answer is no but he managed a few players who brought home the trophy in 1966.

Gerry Byrne, Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan were all members of the squad that led England to victory in 1966, the year that England hosted the FIFA Club World Cup and the year England beat Germany 4-2.

Callaghan remembers Shankly fondly and says that even after their success he remembers Shanks walking up to him and saying;

Well done, son. But you can forget about winning the World Cup because you’ve got more important things to think about!

To Shankly, all that mattered to the rest of the team, the people of Liverpool and the fans was that Liverpool came out on top again that season.
