Peppa Pig has come to town
We all know and love that perfect pink piggy little Miss Peppa Pig and, of course, Daddy and Mummy Pig, not forgetting little George too. We are so excited the whole Pig family and some friends will be at the Empire Theatre this month on the 28th and 29th of May. Your little ones will love singing and dancing with Peppa, her friends and family in a bright and colourful interactive show, sure to have the whole family joining in the fun.
To infinity and beyond
If you have a family member who is fascinated with all things space related, then ‘Destination Space’ at the World Museum is for you. Celebrating Tim Peake’s trip to the International Space Station, ‘Destination Space’ season is offering a variety of demonstrations and activities to educate and fascinate. Visitors will gain knowledge of the space related process whilst being entertained. Activities include learning about Newton’s second law of motion, understanding why astronauts need to undertake toilet training before they head to into space and much more. You can attend the event on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May.
Over the water arty activities
A quick train ride across the Mersey takes you to the Wirral. Board trains to Chester or Ellesmere Port from any city centre train station, 6 stops and 15 minutes later you will find yourself in the lovely village of Port Sunlight. Home to the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight has a great history of being the most picturesque village on the Wirral. The village itself was built by Lord Lever for his employees to live within a short distance of their workplace; a beautiful visit for any family. The Lady Lever Art Gallery was a tribute from Lord Lever to his wife, and is host to a number of exciting art based activities over the month of May, including a circus skills workshop with face painting and balloons on 30th May – a perfect way to spend the bank holiday weekend.
Explore at The Bluecoat
The Bluecoat Centre for Contemporary Arts holds exhibitions year round, all of which are fun and educational for the entire family. Some events run from early spring into late summer and all provide visitors with a great day to make lots of arty memories. The Explore event runs from 13:00 -16:00pm and is free for drop in visitors until the 28th May. This event encourages visitors to partake in artist led activities, somewhere to spend a short time or the entire afternoon with the whole family.
Ferry across the Mersey
Possibly the UK’s most iconic form of public transport is the Mersey Ferry. Hop on board and enjoy a gentle cruise along the calm waters of the River Mersey, taking in Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, the Three Graces, the Albert Dock and the Wirral coast. Step on and off the ferry at designated stops to visit the U-Boat story at Woodside ferry terminal and the Spaceport at Seacombe, or just stay on and enjoy the wind in your hair. Occasionally the specially commissioned dazzle ferry ‘Snowdrop’ takes to the River Mersey, displaying her custom paint in commemoration of World War One. The ferry is the only one of its kind, highlighting the introduction of dazzle paint used as camouflage during the war to make vessels more difficult to target. A trip the whole family will enjoy, with regular cruises operating daily, taking just under an hour to complete a round trip or spend the day hopping on and off at the sights.
Liverpool Sound City
The popular music festival is returning to the city once again this year, showcasing some of the finest music acts of today. Florence and the Machine, The Coral and Ed Sheeran are among a list of fabulous acts due to grace the stage at Bramley-Moore dock. So if you and your family are big music buffs, looking to turn the weekend into a family festival experience, The Shankly Hotel is the perfect base to begin. The festival will run across the bank holiday weekend on the 28th and 29th of May, but tickets are selling fast so get your skates on.
A sensory rush at St George Hall
Hosting a variety of performances throughout the month of May, St George’s Hall will always have something for the family to enjoy. Coming to the plateau at St Georges Hall from the 27th- 30th of May is Audio Sonic Vision, a production by the JELLYFISHMOON company. This visually stunning creation surrounds the audience with 360 degree projected geometric journeys onto a domed surface, complemented by soundtracks from the Constellation Collective. A sensory delight not to be missed, perfect for the entire family running from 11am-8pm.
A day down the Docks
Being a huge part of Liverpool history, the Albert Dock is home to a number of great activities to entertain your family for a day or even two. With so much on offer knowing what is happening in advance makes planning your time there a little easier. The Merseyside Maritime Museum is holding a selection of exhibitions, including a display of antique shipping posters depicting the changes in transatlantic travel, through style and needs of the passengers from 1880 – 1980. A dip into the Tate Modern will provide the family with displays of photography, sculpture and the occasional interactive exhibition. This month, starting the 18th of May, in celebration of Francis Bacon’s: Invisible Rooms, families are invited to experiment with light and space, building dens and playing inside cubes in the free family area inside the gallery. Or you could just spend the day eating ice cream and looking for jellyfish…
Topless bus tours
A great way to see the city without getting blisters on your feet is a double decker bus tour. Running all day the roofless bus tours take you and family on a hop on and off journey round our fair city’s greatest attractions. Weather permitting this is a great way to get round town, and include all the sights and sounds Liverpool has to offer, from the Albert Dock through China Town and off to the Liverpool Cathedral. Tours can be tailored to include visits to LFC home ground Anfield or a Cathedral Tower visit depending on what you care to see.
A day in the park
Sefton Park is located just outside the city centre, a short train or bus journey away, and is a perfect spot for taking in the air, going for a picnic or visiting one of the many events held there throughout the year. This month on the 28th and 29th of May, the Palm House is holding a bank holiday gathering of artisans, offering up splendid creations of food, music and art and inviting all of us all to share in the delights. With workshops in willow weaving and culinary classes creating fabulous foods to tempt the taste buds, the whole family can come along and get involved. The two-day festival will be providing displays of artistry in all of its forms, and visitors can also enjoy live music and craft ales in the licensed bar area. Visitors of all ages are welcome and will be thoroughly entertained with all the festival has to offer.
