Here at The Shankly Hotel we’re dedicated to providing an environment where apprentices can thrive and really develop their core skills. We work in conjunction with a number of local higher educational institutions. Together with The City of Liverpool College we provide young adults with a real life working environment. We are considered to be one of the city’s most exciting accommodation providers across a varying range of sectors. From builders to chefs and receptionists, we offer a wide range of Liverpool apprenticeship opportunities. We’re particularly proud when our apprentices are recognised.
Awards in recognition
This year’s Switch Onto Business awards were particularly exciting as one of our very own apprentices was nominated for the award ‘Apprentice of Year’.
The award set out to recognise an individual under a Liverpool apprenticeship programme who has taken ownership for their personal development. These efforts then leading to a positive impact towards their contribution to the organisation.
We’re delighted to announce that Amy Wilson, an apprentice pastry chef at The Bastion took home the award. We couldn’t be prouder of her achievements over the past 12+ months.
Kind words form her mentor
Head Chef, Matt Cox said of Amy;
“Amy had just turned 16 years old the month before we opened The Shankly Hotel in August last year. Never having been in a kitchen environment before but knowing this is where she wanted to work. Most importantly she wanted to specialise in pastry. Going from being very timid in the kitchen to running the veg, pastry or larder sections. On occasion all three at once when the kitchen needed it. Amy is innovative, will try anything, experiments, and has lots of great ideas and works as hard as anyone I have ever met. Regularly working extra hours making sure that what she does is the best it can be. Now having signed up to do NVQ Level 3 in pastry at her own expense and in her own time, using up a valuable day off in the process. She is very driven and wants to succeed.
Amy still wouldn’t say boo to a goose but comes into her own as soon as service starts. She takes no prisoners and will do anything it takes to get the job done no matter what stands in her way. Such an exemplary member of the team and there’s always a smile on her face. I would put her up there with one of the best apprentices I have ever worked with in 20 years of catering.”
