Football Legends Take a Tour of Liverpool with Shankly Tours

The Shankly Tours are one of the most popular experiences our guests can enjoy when they stay with us at The Shankly Hotel, but it’s not just the public that have been enjoying our truly unique and exciting tour of Liverpool.

The city has been lucky enough to host special charity matches at the legendary Anfield Stadium over the years, featuring some of the biggest names in international football.

Whilst here on charitable business, it only seemed right that the legends would explore the city and find out more about the culture that makes Liverpool the best city in the world.

Real Madrid Legends’ Tour of Liverpool

In 2017, Anfield welcomed Real Madrid legends to our great city to play an amazing game of football and explore Liverpool. Following the mighty Reds’ 4-3 victory over the Spanish giants, the Real Madrid legends were treated to an unforgettable tour around the home of the Liver Bird.

Having collaborated with Real Madrid Football Club and LFC, the Shankly Experience team crafted an exciting city tour for the visiting footballers. Embarking on a cultural journey around the city, the team were able to experience everything Liverpool had to offer, from Mathew Street, The Cavern Club and The Beatles’ homes, to footballing beacons like The Shankly Playing Fields and Melwood.

Topped off with an incredible private lunch in our stunning Baby Eden function room at The Shankly Hotel, the tour was one that will surely stick with the Real Madrid legends for years to come.

Welcoming Bayern Munich Legends

This year, it was Bayern Munich’s turn to attempt to defeat the legendary Red heroes, but both teams played incredibly well and came up evens with a 5-5 draw.

The German team’s legends enjoyed a similar experience to Real Madrid’s team last year, with a luxurious meal in the coveted Garden of Eden at The Shankly Hotel. Some of Bayern’s most well-loved players took a seat in the beautiful venue and enjoyed the spectacular views over the iconic skyline.

Bill Returns to Preston with The Shankly Hotel Preston

The Shankly Hotel on Victoria Street, Liverpool, is one of the best hotels in the city. Offering guests and visitors a chance to admire the life and times of Bill Shankly while surrounded by luxury furnishings and impeccable service, every time. Now, the Shankly reach is extending further with the announcement of The Shankly Hotel Preston.

Following the huge success of The Shankly Hotel in Liverpool, we have now announced plans to transform the Old Post Office in Preston into a new luxury hotel dedicated to the great Bill Shankly. Formerly intended to be named The Harris Hotel after Preston’s greatest benefactor, Edmund Robert Harris, the new direction for the hotel will honour the special relationship Shankly built with Preston and its people during his career at Preston North End.

The £15 million project will once again be a collaboration between the Shankly family and Signature Living to highlight and commemorate Bill Shankly’s iconic footballing career. The Shankly Hotel Preston will stand as a beacon for football fans, Preston natives and tourists, bringing together the historic building and a Preston legend into one incredible, luxury hotel. Preston is a fantastic location with so much to do and see and we are looking forward to making our mark on the city.

Bill Shankly’s History in Preston

Bill Shankly began his relationship with Preston in the July of 1933 when he signed for Preston North End. After a season playing professionally at Carlisle United, with 16 appearances for the Northern team, Shankly was approached by Preston North End who had offered a transfer fee of £500.

Although he began his career at Preston in the reserves, they were still placed in a league of a higher standard than his former club, Carlisle United. It wasn’t long until he made his first team debut though, taking to the pitch on 9th December 1933, just three months after the Glenbuck lad turned 20. Preston North End dominated this game, winning 5-0 after Shankly created an early goal.

While at Preston, Shankly helped the team gain promotion to the First Division from Second and was present for some of Preston North End’s greatest achievements. Reaching the FA Cup Final in 1937 and 1938 and winning the latter against Huddersfield Town with a 1-0 penalty in the final minute of extra time. That same year, the team also finished third in the league marking the most successful season of Shankly’s playing career.

The Shankly Hotel Preston

Despite joining the RAF during the Second World War, Shankly continued to play the game he loved so much. Participating in seven wartime internationals and appearing for other teams, namely Liverpool and Arsenal, while times were hard.

When the war was over, Shankly returned to Preston, but he was 33 years old and coming to the end of his playing career. He remained at Preston until he retired from playing in 1949. While he immediately took up the position of Carlisle United’s manager, he never turned his back on the team where he spent most of his professional playing career.

Family Support for The Shankly Hotel Preston

Just like the iconic Shankly Hotel in Liverpool, The Shankly Hotel Preston will be developed in partnership with Shankly’s Grandson. Chris Carline is co owner, curator and director of the Liverpool site and he’s excited to take the Shankly concept to a whole new city.

“Preston was a natural fit, it is the next place that resonates greatly with Bill Shankly and the family. He played for Preston for 16 years and in that respect spent a large part of his life there.

He loved the club and the people, and they loved him. There are so many tributes to him at Deepdale, like The Bill Shankly Kop.

Preston is a great city with some amazing buildings and none more so than the future Shankly Hotel in Preston.”

Chris Carline

Both Chris Carline and Lawrence Kenwright knew that, if there was going to be a second Shankly Hotel, the first choice would be Preston. The Shankly Hotel Preston development is the first stage in rolling The Shankly out nationally and hopefully internationally.

Read more from our interview with Chris Carline here.

The Shankly Hotel Preston’s Future

The Liverpool site is all about the atmosphere and guest experience, giving incredible service, amazing accommodation, unforgettable events and an unparalleled drinking and dining experience and these high standards are set to be mirrored at The Shankly Hotel Preston.

Despite the similarities in name and theme, the hotel will have its own unique look and feel and will elaborate further on the varied and exciting life that Shankly led.

In Liverpool, Bill Shankly is known for helping transform the floundering Liverpool Football Club into the ambitious and successful force it is today. In Preston, he was known as a star player who helped North End on their way to greatness and The Shankly Hotel Preston will help to tell this story.

The former post office building in Preston is 114 years old and a Grade II listed building and will soon be transformed into a luxurious 65 room boutique hotel, following the same brand and format of the original hotel in Liverpool with luxurious rooms, an opulent bar and restaurant, a Shankly museum and a wedding and events venue.

The Shankly Hotel Preston is due to open to the public in September and we couldn’t be more excited. Stay up to date with progress and construction on our dedicated The Shankly Hotel Preston page and our Twitter.

7 Highlights from Our Shankly Tours

At its heart, Liverpool is a football city. With two great teams representing the real heart of Liverpool, taking a football-themed tour of the city is the best way to see the history that shaped the sport that our city holds so dear. Our Shankly Tours are built with you in mind, taking you to see iconic landmarks across the city.

For an LFC super fan and Bill Shankly admirer, our Match Day and Memorabilia Tours are the perfect way to get a glimpse into Shankly’s Liverpool.

Take a look at just some of the highlights of both these incredible tours and get excited to begin your journey around the city that made for Shankly.

Pre-Game Hospitality at the legendary Sandon Pub

The Sandon is one of the most famous red pubs in Anfield and is well-known as the ‘birthplace of Liverpool Football Club’. The first brewer in The Sandon was once president of Everton FC in their early days before he started his own football club when the relationship turned sour.

The football club he started would go on to become Liverpool FC as we know them today. Fans flood through the doors of The Sandon every match day to experience the authentic and unique atmosphere that can only come from a pub with deep ties to the Reds.

Our Match Day Tour offers you the option to enjoy pre-match hospitality at the iconic Liverpool drinking hole. If you purchase the entire Match Day Package, you’ll enjoy a free drink on arrival, a delicious, home-cooked meal and unlimited hot drinks before you head to the stadium to watch Klopp’s eleven do their thing.

Match Day Stadium Tour

When you book onto a Match Day Tour, not only will you get to see all of Bill Shankly’s favourite haunts, you’ll also get a behind the scenes look at Anfield itself.

While the fans are preparing for a thrilling 90 minutes, you’ll get to see the areas that only players and VIP guests can visit. Touch the infamous This Is Anfield sign, walk down the players’ tunnel and stop by the press area and see where many a post-match reflection has taken place.

You’ll even be able to get a photo in Klopp’s seat and see what it’s like to be the man in charge!

Visit the Ground Where LFC Players Train

Melwood, in West Derby, has been the training ground for Liverpool FC players for decades. After years of use as a school football training ground, the area was in a state of disrepair. Shankly noted in his autobiography that ‘it was a sorry wilderness’ and pledged to improve the training conditions.

Shankly helped to transform and revolutionise Melwood into a top-class training facility. One that his incredible team deserved.

Shankly spent many hours here, making sure his team were up to standard and perfecting his ‘pass and move, keep it simple’ philosophy.

You can now cast your own eye over the place where Liverpool players spend hours upon hours perfecting their techniques and training to be the best in the world.

The Shankly Playing Fields

During his time as Liverpool FC manager, Shankly took up residence in Sandforth Road in West Derby, just a few minutes walk from Melwood training ground.

Sitting at the top end of Sandforth Road are the Shankly Playing Fields, a recreational public area where children, teenagers and adults alike can come together for a bit of football fun.

When he wasn’t leading to Reds to victory, kids of the time reported that he used to come and referee for their friendly matches.

Keith Duckworth, a Liverpool native, once had the privilege of using Shankly’s toilet when nature called one day on Shankly Playing Field’s grass. He said: “Couldn’t believe I was sat on his loo. He told me that if I wanted to play for Liverpool, I should play for a team instead of watching them.”

On the Match Day Tour, you can catch a glimpse of the playing fields and imagine a time when Shankly used to grace the grass and inspire aspiring footballers of West Derby.

Shankly’s West Derby Home

When you visit the Shankly Playing Fields, you’ll also get the chance to see where Bill Shankly lived with Nessie.

Everyone in the area knew Bill and everyone developed a strong respect for the Liverpool manager. He was always friendly, always kind and would stop and sign autographs and speak to anyone that took the time to say hello.

The house is modest for such an icon and hero, but what more would you expect from such a down to earth man?

Guided Tour of our Shankly Memorabilia

Shankly memorabilia

The virtual reality hologram will place Bill at your table, enjoying your food with you as you soak in all the memorabilia that the restaurant has to offer.

Looking Forward to Liverpool Oktoberfest 2017

Strap on your Lederhosen, grab your steins and get ready for an Oom-pah-ing good time at Liverpool Oktoberfest 2017. Taking over Pier Head this giant German festival has become a favourite among Liverpool residents and visitors alike and will be hosted this weekend from 21st – 24th September.

Let’s take a look at what you can expect from Liverpool Oktoberfest 2017.

Cheap German Beer

Fans of a perfectly brewed golden ale will understand the joy of picking up a chilled glass of German beer. Especially when it comes in huge stein glasses that can hold two pints of the stuff.

This year your pennies will stretch further too as organisers are selling these giant bevvies for just £8.

Unlikely to run short Oktoberfest will be supplied by a tanker holding 23,000 litres of specially brewed beer brought in from a 200-year-old Bavarian brewery.

Steins for everyone.

Awesome Attire

Traditional Bavarian attire will be worn by all staff at Liverpool Oktoberfest, ladies in their dirndl and guys getting their pins out in Lederhosen.

These delightful garments have been around for centuries inspired by the traditional garb of peasants who lived and still live in the Alps.

Dirndl

In the1870’s the dirndl became the height of fashion among ladies of the upper classes in Austria and by 1890 the popularity of the garment had spread to the rest of the country.

A properly tailored dirndl can set you back a couple of hundred euros, made from custom printed fabrics and made to measure.

The dirndls of today are still worn on formal or special occasions by Austrian and Bavarian ladies. The less traditional outfits, whilst styled similar to the dirndl are reserved for festivals or costumes in themed bars and restaurants around the world.

Lederhosen

Translated literally as “leather breeches” Lederhosen are derived from the working-class uniform of Bavaria.

The tough wearing material of Lederhosen was perfect for men who daily undertook physical labour in their job roles.

Instead of catapulting to the height of fashion at the end of the 17th-century Lederhosen popularity declined as it was regarded as clothing for “uncultured peasants” rather than fashionable attire for the upper classes.

The classic Lederhosen and techniques for tailoring them are now preserved as a heritage Bavarian garment and are regarded as a symbol of Bavarian pride or male virility. Many regional men still chose to wear Lederhosen to carry out taxing outdoor chores or to attend local festivals or pubs.

At Oktoberfest, both dirndl and Lederhosen will be making an appearance in traditional and more modern forms. Get into the spirit and check out the latest modern Bavarian fashion here for inspiration.

Deliciously Traditional Delicacies

All this beer will need soaking up with some tasty food and luckily Oktoberfest will be bringing more than mass quantities of German alcohol down to Pier Head.

Immerse yourself in the Bavarian culture completely by dining on dishes such as Bratwurst, Brezel, Schnitzel and Schweinebarten. All perfect dishes to accompany a pint or tow of Bavarian beer made mainly of pork and pastry.

Better still there are fabulous offers for both beer and food available including Bavarian sausage, fries and a ½ pint of Feistber, just to get you started.

Full on Festival Atmosphere

Through the weekend there will be a live DJ playing some traditional and popular German tunes and of course what Oktoberfest would be complete without an Oom-pah band.

Prepare yourself by brushing up on your German music knowledge with a few favourite tracks;

  • Anton aus Tyrol
  • Cowboy und Indianer (Kom hol das Lasso raus)
  • Fliegerlied
  • Ein Prosit der Gemuetlichkeit
  • Zikke Zakke, Zikke Zakke hey hey hey

You and your friends are guaranteed an experience of German heritage and culture as well as a full stomach and a taste for finely brewed German beer at this year’s Liverpool Oktoberfest.

Don’t forget to grab yourself a souvenir stein glass and head on down to Pier Head this weekend.

Bill Shankly as Remembered by the People of Liverpool

Bill Shankly was a true hero of Merseyside. Not only for his raging success in turning Liverpool football Club into the undeniable force it is today, but for his demeanour and connection with the people of the city he came to call home.

If he wasn’t driving down the street with Nessie’s knickers stuck to his car roof, he was touching the lives of many, many people in Liverpool

To help celebrate The Shankly Hotel’s second birthday, we invited our Facebook followers to share some of their stories of the great man himself, offering an endearing insight into how Liverpool’s greatest football manager was a down to earth and well-loved man.

“Sometimes you have to lose to know how to win” – Bill Shankly Remembered

“When I was 11 my Dad used to run the local Boxing club when I had my first fight I was so excited partly because it was my first fight but mainly because Bill Shankly was giving the trophies out.

Well, I got beat and instead of picking up my runners up trophy I ran out of the ring and into the changing room. I was really upset because in my eyes I had let my Dad down and I had done it in front of the great man. My Dad was trying to console me saying it would be ok.i wasn’t having any of it. Then in came Shanks which reduced me to a blubbering jelly.

You forgot this and gave me the runners up trophy. He put his hand on my shoulder and said: ‘Don’t worry son sometimes you have to lose to know how to win.’

With that he went out to watch the next bout. There was me with a smile as wide as the Mersey I’ve never ever forgot that day and told the story many times over the years. The word legend is used too often these days but in my eyes, there couldn’t be a more appropriate word to describe Shanks”

Barry Robinson

The Letter to a Fellow Footballer

Bill Shankly Remembered

“This is the letter Bill Shankly sent to Jeff Twentyman the father of my friend Will Twentyman congratulating him on his move to Liverpool and his step up from the third division to the first which is now the premier league and top tier of English football.

This letter which also features in his book the secret diary of a Liverpool scout all about the scouting work Jeff did as he continued to be a great servant to the club for many years after he finished playing for them.

The reason the story is also amusing is because the reason behind the move was a floodlight fire causing part of the ground at the club he was at before was the reason he was sold as the most valuable player at the club at that time to raise funds!”

“In the early 1970’s, when I was about ten, the local football team Poulton Victoria had a football pitch at the back of our house in Wallasey and they hosted a charity match with some big celebrities such as Rod Stewart and Jimmy Hill and it was even filmed by the BBC!

Towards the end of the game Bill Shankly turned up and was absolutely mobbed by fans, I was so overwhelmed I touched his coat and he looked down at me and smiled.

I can still feel that coat, it was a brown raincoat and the memory is as fresh as yesterday over 40 years later.”

Bill Shankly’s Toilet

“We used to play football on Barnfield Playing fields now known as the Shankly playing fields when I was about 10. We had our jackets as posts and he lived opposite and used to come across and ref.

One day I needed the loo and was about to leave early but instead, he took me home to his to use his toilet so I didn’t miss the footy. Couldn’t believe I was sat on his loo. He also told me that if I wanted to play for Liverpool I should play for a team instead of watching them.

I did just that on his say so. Never played for Liverpool but love playing and love Mr Shankly as we used to call him. An absolute legend who always looked out for us kids.”

Always the Life of the Party

“It was either the 1971 or 1973 FA Cup Final when I would have been 10 or 12 years old. We were having a street party for the cup final in Handel Street (which was off Lodge Lane but sadly no longer there).

The road was partially blocked off due to the party and a car came down the street, stopped and out got Bill Shankly. He was made up we were having a street party for Liverpool. He stayed for a while and chatted to all the adults and children. I said “Hello Mr Shankly” and he shook my hand.

I couldn’t believe how friendly and down to earth he was and the memory will last forever.”

The Man Who Could Walk on Water

“When my husband and I were walking down Muirhead Avenue one afternoon Bill was waiting in his car for his wife Nessie to come out of the hairdressers.

My hubby asked him if it was true that he could walk on water. Bill looked him straight in the eye and said ‘Aye laddie aye.’”

Jeff Campbell

One thing is for sure, the people of Liverpool loved Bill Shankly and Bill Shankly loved Liverpool. Although he was raised in Scotland, the people and the city of Liverpool will always have space in their heart for the man that changed football forever.

The Rise of Kop and Pop Culture in 1965 Liverpool

In Liverpool, music and football go hand in hand thanks to the rise in both Merseybeat and the quality of Merseyside football in the 1950’s. After Bill Shankly accepted the manager’s role at Liverpool football club there was a dramatic turnaround in performance and of course, Beatlemania began to traverse the globe as the boys made headlines with their unique sound.

The Shankly Museum holds vast archives of rare Shankly memorabilia but none showcase the link between Liverpool music and football so much as the telegram that will be unveiled to mark the two-year anniversary of The Shankly Hotel opening. Shanks received the telegram from the FabFour on the day of the 1965 FA Cup Final when Liverpool played Leeds and won.

This remarkable piece of footballing and music memorabilia marks an upturn in the pop and Kop culture of Liverpool. These two fascinating phenomena took audiences across the world by storm creating a combined passion for Liverpool football and Merseybeat music.

Kop Culture

“I’m just one of the people who stands on the Kop. They think the same as I do, and I think the same as they do. It’s a kind of marriage of people who like each other.”

Shankly was loved by Liverpool, not just for what he did to transform the city’s beloved team but also for his quick wit and sharp humour. Scousers are known for being direct, straight talking people with hearts of gold and that’s just what Shankly was like.

Above all Shankly was a down to earth man who knew the magnitude of the task he had ahead of him when he walked through the main entrance at Anfield in December 1959.

It wasn’t long before his work was rewarded as Liverpool football club climbed the ranks sweeping into division one by April 1962.

The turn around delighted fans who could be heard singing their hearts out from the Kop urging their players onward and upwards.

Fathers would drop their boys into the “boy’s pen” and go stand with their mates bellowing out tune after tune from the charts, which at the time was filled with tracks from local Merseybeat bands.

“The fans here are the greatest in the land. They know the game and they know what they want to see. The People on the Kop make you feel great – yet humble.”

Pop Culture

The rise in the quality of Liverpool football, thanks to Shanks’, mirrored another sweeping craze of the sixties; Beatlemania.

Four boys from the city were taking the music world by storm producing track after track, each hitting the UK top ten and holding their positions for weeks on end.

Of course, the people of Liverpool were jubilant at this point as two of their homegrown talents were sweeping the world and coming up trumps.

Liverpool Football club even played the top ten at Anfield matches through the PA system before the game as almost every song belonged to a Merseybeat band. This also became known as the earliest instance of pre-match entertainment.

Gerry and the Pacemakers, Cilla Black and The Beatles had arrived on the music scene as had Liverpool football club in the international world of football.

The synchronicity of the two occurrences stirred something inside the people of Liverpool creating the amazing mix of music loving football fans we have today.

The Beatles and Shankly

The Beatles are known for having no particular ties to either of the Merseyside football clubs and quite famously when Brian Epstein asked for tickets for the 1965 FA Cup final for the boys Shanks replied;

“I have never seen any of The Beatles standing on the Kop, any tickets I have spare will be going to my mates on the Kop.”

Never the less The Beatles sent support to their home team on the day of the 1965 FA Cup final against Leeds, the clubs greatest moment to date and a testament to Shankly, the man who put them there.

The FabFour sent a telegram wishing the team and Shanks the best of luck and letting them know they’d be watching on TV.

Liverpool went on to play a gruelling match against Leeds, who also gave it their all, and the FA Cup final of 1965 went into extra time with no goals scored.

The first goal of extra time was scored in a matter of minutes putting Liverpool up by one, then Leed’s equalised seven minutes later making it neck and neck. The final goal was scored in the 117th minute by Liverpool winning the game and giving Liverpool their first-ever FA Cup triumph.

Could the Beatles telegram have given them the extra push to perform or was it just the brilliance of Shankly and the player’s reluctance to disappoint him and their fans?

All we know is that The Beatles telegram to Shanks now serves as a reminder of one of Liverpool’s finest footballing moments and Shankly’s “greatest day”.

BBC to Broadcast Feature Length Documentary on the Life of Bill Shankly

The BBC is set to release a full-length Bill Shankly Documentary before the end of the year, exploring the life and legacy of Liverpool Football Club’s most famous manager.

Bill Shankly was a hero to many people across the city and the film will look at his career and his goal to make Liverpool a ‘bastion of invincibility’. Shankly: Nature’s Fire finished filming at the end of May this year and is due to air within a few months.

The Scottish manager was a true character on the streets of Liverpool and the new documentary will follow his story from start to finish, showcasing his charisma, strength, uniqueness and charm.

Shankly: Nature’s Fire – A Bill Shankly Documentary Like No Other

The Bill Shankly Documentary has received a great amount of support from the footballing community, with former players from Scotland and Liverpool Football Club acting as contributors. His family, fans and journalists, including Sports writer Hugh Mcillvanney and Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, have also taken part to make this the best tribute to the legend himself.

The film was two years in the making and Peter Hooton, producer of the film and lead singer of local band The Farm was determined to do the story justice.

He said: “Shankly epitomised a different set of values that I think are still admired to this day. I agreed to be involved in the making of this documentary because Shankly was my boyhood hero”.

Shankly: Nature’s Fire will feature archive footage and interviews with those who knew the man best, footage from matches and from his day to day life to give a great representation of the personality and charm that the man himself was known for.

Liverpool FC’s Hero

Bill Shankly was the saviour of Liverpool football club, he took the club from a dwindling position in Second Division to a team that had a trophy cabinet to be proud of, as well as a solid place in First Division.

His now legendary quote, “my idea was to build Liverpool into a bastion of invincibility. My idea was to build Liverpool up and up until eventually, everyone would have to submit and give in’, epitomised his attitude and determination to turn the club around.

He wasn’t always about the football, he was a stable family man who was loved by the community and his relatives alike. His grandson, Christopher Carline, credits his Nan, Bill’s wife, with the success and unfaltering determination of his Granddad. Agnes Wren Shankly supported the Scottish native through everything and is an icon and role model for the modern-day WAG.
