Why Bill Shankly Was a True Man of the People

On an unremarkable day back in September 2016, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn stood on the banks of the River Mersey, arms held above his head attempting to imitate the man he was about to draw upon, and quoted not Marx or Locke, but Shankly – A man of the people.

“Let’s do it in the spirit of Shankly, who said: ‘The socialism I believe in, is everybody working for the same goal and everybody having a share in the rewards,” roared Corbyn to rapturous applause.

The decision to quote Shankly in Liverpool was hardly surprising, however, it showed that his words continue to resonate even today.

So, with this in mind, we thought we’d take a closer look at some of Shankly’s best quotes and his relationship with socialism.

A Man of the People

Described by his grandson Chris Carline as a “social whirlwind who loved being around people,” Shankly was known for his liberal views. “He made the people happy” says his statue, and that he did. In a city underfunded and undervalued, Shankly truly was a man of the people.

Ray Clemence remembered of times when Liverpool fans would be on on the same train as the team who were returning from away matches. Several of the fans had not bought tickets but, when the inspector came up the walkway, Shankly would put his hand in his pocket and pay for the fans’ tickets because he knew just how important they were to the club.

Stories of Shankly showing up at events and mingling with fans are legendary in a city, nonetheless, that makes legends out of mortals. That said, Shankly needed the fans as much as they needed him – and both were entwined and inextricably linked to politics.

There are so many examples of Shankly being kind and helpful. He would reply to letters from fans on a regular basis, give out tickets to matches – he was even seen carrying shopping for the elderly around West Derby. These genuine acts of kindness epitomise his belief in socialism.

A True Socialistman of the people

One moment that cements Shankly’s status as a man of the people is the 1971 FA Cup Final in which Liverpool lost 2-1 to Arsenal.

Liverpool returned home defeated, yet Shankly managed to hold over 100,000 fans in the palm of his hand on the steps of St. George’s Hall. On a sun-drenched afternoon in May, Shankly stood in front of the crowd with his arms wide and gave a speech of epic proportion:

“Since I came here to Liverpool, and to Anfield, I have drummed it into our players time and time again that they are privileged to play for you. And if they didn’t believe me, they believe me now.”

Here, Shankly makes important use of the words “you” and “our” in service of the socialist imagine he sought to represent. As a man of the people, Shankly had the power to summarise moments of mass elation and to entertain a crowd with his words.

Shankly himself once professed that he was a man of the people, exclaiming: “I’m a people’s man. Only the people matter,” in reply to the familiar chant: “Shankly is our king” – however, if there was one man never to be king, it was Shankly: a stark socialist.

Returning to that day in 2016 when Jeremy Corbyn gave his speech, a banner that adorns the Kop at most home matches can be seen in the crowd; it reads: “UNITY IS STRENGTH.”

This message shows that Shankly truly understood Liverpool and for that, he truly was, a man of the people.

The Sugarhill Gang Live

When: Saturday 15th June

Where: Garden of Eden Rooftop, The Shankly Hotel, Liverpool

Sugarhill Gang

40 years ago the Godfathers of rap music, The Sugarhill Gang crashed into the mainstream with the first bona fide worldwide rap hit, “Rapper’s Delight.”

Eventually selling over 8 million copies and cementing the hip hop movement’s place in popular culture, this mega hit went on to become the biggest selling rap single of all time. And today, the iconic sound of The Sugarhill Gang and the Furious 5 is just as powerful and relevant to audiences old and new.

With support from our very own homegrown Liverpool rap collective the L100 Cypher we can’t wait to hear the sounds of New York and Liverpool collide at this unmissable live music event.

We’re sure it’s going to be the show of a lifetime.

The Godfathers of Hip Hop

Formed around 1979, The Sugarhill Gang were made up of Michael “Wonder Mike” Wright, Henry “Big Bank Hank” Jackson, and Guy “Master Gee” O’Brien, all from in Englewood, New Jersey. They were assembled into a group by producer Sylvia Robinson, who was the founder of Sugar Hill Records with her husband, Joe Robinson.

When they released “Rapper’s Delight” it became the first ever rap song to hit the top 40 charts. Infectious and catchy, the song borrowed the break from Chic’s ‘Good times’’, but with the Gang’s unique and bouncy sound.

The Sugarhill Gang went on to release such hits as “Apache, “8th Wonder“, “The Message and “Living in the Fast Lane. Placing themselves at the forefront of this new musical movement.

Today, the band tour with two of the original members, “Wonder Mike” and “Master Gee”, following the sad death of Big Bank Hank on 11 November 2014, after a long battle with cancer.

Still pleasing crowds with their greatest hits, they have teamed up with Henry Williams (pka Hendogg) and DJ T. Dynasty who have both performed with the group for 20 years and counting.

And this summer, the godfathers of hip hop are coming to Liverpool for a very special show.

The Liverpool Music Scene

There is nowhere better to host an unforgettable gig than Liverpool. The music scene in the city has always been the beating heart and foundation of Liverpool, and today is no different.

The Sugarhill Gang’s famous New York sound goes hand in hand with Liverpool’s fascinating history. The two cities have always been sisters, holding a bond that harks back to the Trans-Atlantic era between 1944 and 1968, when over 25,000 merchant seamen would leave Liverpool to spend two weeks in New York, followed by two weeks in Liverpool.

These men were listening to rhythm and blues in New York in the 50s and buying Little Richard and Chuck Berry records in the 60s, two years before they had been heard in Europe. And of course, this distinct sound is how The Beatles first hit the big time.

Both Liverpool and New York offered raw, vibrant and progressive music, bouncing to their own unique beats.

Over 50 years ago, The Beatles created one of the defining moments of the 1960s with their momentous gig on the roof. So, it’s only fitting to welcome fellow legends The Sugarhill Gang to the Shankly rooftop to celebrate 40 years since their momentous music breakthrough.

Get ready for a crazy Liverpool V NYC musical culture clash.

Shankly’s First Love: The Blue of Carlisle United

Before Shankly was a red he was a blue. Now before everyone gets annoyed and angry, Shank’s was never a proper blue, he was never an Evertonian – although he did come extremely close to managing Everton in 1977. No, the blue in question is that of Carlisle United.

Had the iconic Scotsman never donned the electric blue strip of Carlisle United in 1932 or managed the club in 1949, he may never had joined his beloved Liverpool. But what of his first Love? – and we don’t mean Nessie.

From his first forays into management to his resignation, here’s how the world’s most famous red was once a staunch blue.

Shankly and Carlisle United

It was with a certain initial reluctance that Shankly moved into management for he was convinced that he had more to offer as a player. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old masseur took the Carlisle United job in 1949 and thus, Shankly the manager was born.

Carlisle United were a destitute, Third Division North side who found it almost impossible to attract players due to their sheer remoteness; never mind their low league position. Nevertheless Shankly, ever the optimist, immediately turned the club’s remote location into an advantage and transformed Brunton Park into a fortress – as he did with Anfield years later.

Shankly would remind his players of how far the opposition had travelled for the match and how they would be extremely tired from the journey in order to inspire them. He also established a relationship with the fans in his own unique way, urging them to support the team: “I used to on the tannoy system at a quarter to three speak to the fans every other week before the game. Instead of putting something in the programme, I spoke to them, explaining if we’d change the team, how we had played in the last game – everything. The supporters loved it, they lapped it up.”

Shankly not only stabilised what was a sinking ship that season, but he also showed glimpses of the manager he would later become.

The Greatest Feat in History

Carlisle United

Source: Shutterstock

Shankly would transform Carlisle United into a more professional outfit, a feat he would repeat years later when managing Liverpool in the Second Division. In his maiden season in charge, the Cumbrians finished 9th; a vast improvement on their 15th place finish a year earlier. Indeed, the next season saw ticket sales sky rocket as fans flocked to watch Shank’s team.

The 1950-51 campaign saw Carlisle push for promotion, while a 0-0 draw with Arsenal in the FA Cup only stoked the fans’ excitement.

However, a final placing of 3rd wasn’t enough for promotion and after a Brian Clough-esc squabble with the board, who had refused to pay out on bonuses promised should the team finish in the top three, Shankly resigned.

The future Liverpool boss won 42 of his 95 matches in charge of Carlisle United and furthermore, some would claim that his stint in blue shaped his career in red. So much so that, in 1974 when Carlisle United won promotion to the first division, Shankly began his press conference at Melwood by describing his old club’s elevation as: “The greatest feat in the history of the game.”

The iconic Scotsman would go on to manage Grimsby Town, Workington and Huddersfield Town before arriving at Liverpool. That said, the lessons Shankly learned in Cumbria certainly shaped his career on Merseyside.

The Shankly Hotel | Huge Party Planned if Liverpool Win the League

As the season enters its penultimate chapter Liverpool look in prime position to mount one final assault, one last hurrah.

If that’s the case, we at The Shankly Hotel have decided to throw an enormous party on May 12 if Liverpool win the league; because where else would be better to celebrate such a mammoth and wonderful occasion.

Prepare for a party of epic proportions on The Garden of Eden terrace within The Shankly Hotel if Liverpool can come out on top in May.

The Party of the Year

The Shankly

Picture the scene: the sun is ablaze, the unbroken stream of beer hasn’t stopped for hours, we haven’t been home since the final whistle was blown, oh, and Liverpool are Premier League champions – sounds incredible doesn’t it. We hope to replicate scenes such as these when – sorry – if Liverpool win the league in May.

They’ve come close before, so close in fact that we counted down the best Liverpool teams never to win it, but on this occasion it feels special, incredible almost. And, what could be a more appropriate way to commemorate such an achievement than to celebrate on top of a hotel that bears the name of Liverpool’s adopted son and iconic leader.

This massive event is to include a free bar and entertainment that wouldn’t look out of place in the bowls of the Kop; so, prepare for a soundtrack of Liverpool’s most loved chants on May 12.

Come that momentous day in May, our party could perhaps be a less nervous occasion as the Reds may have been crowned champions by then, or, everyone may be on the brink of a breakdown as the final whistle is blown. So, be prepared to either lessen the pressure or simply continue the celebrations which started way back when Liverpool tore up the history books.

The Shankly Hotel

The Shankly

So, what makes The Shankly Hotel the perfect place to host such an important party?

The Shankly Hotel is the number one destination in the North West for any Liverpool fan. We pride ourselves on our electric matchday atmosphere, in addition to superb drinks deals, a unique environment that is sure to impress any Liverpool supporter and luxurious rooms that are perfect for weekends away with your mates.

Dedicated to Liverpool’s iconic leader, The Bastion Bar and Restaurant is the best place in Liverpool to watch the Reds. Located inside the spectacular Shankly Hotel, this wonderful restaurant enables diners to delve deeper into the personal and professional escapades of the ex-Liverpool boss.

To complete this picture of remarkable opulence, the party is in The Garden of Eden within The Shankly. This beautiful venue is unlike anywhere else as it boasts some of the most wondrous views of the city.

Indeed, where would be more appropriate to toast Liverpool’s success than a venue which overlooks the city that shares their name.

Shed a tear on top of The Shankly as there will be no more worlds to concur when Liverpool win the league.

We hope that Liverpool can be crowned champions this summer so we can throw our epic party on May 12. We hope to have more information about the event soon, so keep an eye on our Facebook and be ready to celebrate come May.

Celebrate National Pie Week at The Shankly Hotel

There aren’t many sports that have their own savoury staple. Perhaps it’s no surprise that the oldest, most celebrated sport in the country has adopted one of the world’s oldest snacks as its emblematic meal: the humble pie epitomises a world immersed by oversea owners and social media.

So, with National Pie Week on the horizon, we’ve decided to take a closer look at why, when you’re at the match, you always choose that meat and potato treat.

A Match Made in Pastry Heaven

A post shared by Fuud ltd (@fuudltd) on

The humble pie has popped up on numerous occasions at some of the most important matches. From 20 stone men to the Sunderland forward who, when a pie was thrown at him from the stands picked it up and devoured it, the pie is a Saturday staple.

So eminent is the connection that in 2008 a man vowed to tour the UK in search of the best savoury snack. He ate a mammoth 92 pies and even penned a book about his experiences named, wait for it, “92 Pies.”

It seems somewhat proper to rate the pies and so, that’s where the team at Pierate come to the fore. Because of them, we now know that Morecambe is the home of the nation’s most loved pie.

Everton’s attempt at a pie, however, was described as: “Goodison, but not good enough.”

But, to our horror and distaste, Liverpool are nowhere to be seen. The cheek of it.

Hombaked Anfield

A post shared by Homebaked (@homebakedliverpool) on

Founded in 2010, Homebaked is a co-operative bakery situated in the shadow of Liverpool’s stadium. Some even say that the current eatery that provides supporters with their pre-match pie was inspired by the kindness of Shankly himself.

This delicious bakery has provided the community and countless supporters from across the world with pies and snacks for almost a century, and, is the ideal place to celebrate National Pie Week.

Since 2010, the cues at Homebaked have snaked out the door and around the street as it has become traditional to purchase a pie to either keep your hands warm or, more importantly, support the local community.

Many believe that Homebaked was inspired by Liverpool’s iconic leader and that could be why their trademark pie is aptly named: “The Shankly Pie” made with steak, bacon, mushroom and onion.

Today, Homebaked use their massive matchday profits to help educate and train their bakers. They also hold classes and communal courses and any surplus food is donated to food banks and homeless shelters.

So, why not pop in and support them this National Pie Week.

We are absolutely delighted to announce that our amazing hotel will feature on a new fly-on-the-wall style TV documentary, produced by Spun Gold TV for the BBC. They were the company behind the BBC One documentary A Very Modern Grand Hotel, which followed the staff of London’s exclusive Corinthia Hotel. As a hotel ourselves, we were fascinated to watch the ins-and-outs of such a marvellous establishment – and we’re honoured to have been asked to take part in something similar.

A Very Northern Hotel

The Shankly Hotel Set to Star in BBC Documentary

The show, entitled ‘A Very Northern Hotel’, will take viewers through our lobby, down our corridors and into our lives to give viewers a glimpse into the daily life of what we’re proud to call one of the most popular hotels in Liverpool! We cater for such a wide variety of guests, from wedding parties to couple’s getaways – but what we’re most famous for are our big party rooms on the top floor that sleep up to 24 guests. From the OMG to WTF rooms, to the Garden of Eden and the Jungle Rooms, we think BBC One viewers are in for a treat.

The show will follow our dedicated staff and new General Manager as they navigate one of the busiest periods of the year. As the BBC has reported in their first press release regarding the documentary, running a hotel, managing large groups and making sure each and every one of our fabulous guests has a wonderful time does not come easy. All within one weekend, we could be hosting a large family wedding, 50th wedding anniversary, baby shower and even a high-octane, high-energy hen-do.

It’s imperative they all feel extra special, without each other’s occasions running into one another!
