The Greatest Liverpool Teams Never to Win a League Title

Manchester City and Tottenham are snapping at Liverpool’s heels as Jurgen Klopp tries desperately to hold them at arm’s length. As the season enters its penultimate chapter Liverpool look ready to mount one final assault, one last hurrah. Now not to curse anything but, this got us thinking: Who are the greatest Liverpool teams never to win a league title?

From ruckuses and rants, to 1-point shootouts – Liverpool have come so close to success on numerous occasions.

Liverpool 1996/97

Liverpool wrapped up the season seven points behind champions Manchester United in 1997. Liverpool also completed the season level on points with both Newcastle United and Arsenal while Manchester United’s sum of 75 points is the lowest ever recorded by a Premier League winner.

Despite leading the Premier League for much of the season, a culmination of too many red cards and even more mistakes contributed to this Liverpool teams’ ultimate demise – an opportunity missed, nonetheless by one of the best, albeit undisciplined Liverpool teams ever.

Liverpool 2008/09

When Liverpool’s 2008-09 season is discussed, two faces and one word in particular spring to mind: those of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres and the word “fact.”

The potent duo combined on an almost weekly basis to demolish teams, forming a powerful, two-headed monster that was supported by superstars such as Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina and Javier Mascherano. It seemed almost inevitable that Liverpool would become champions.

But too many draws in January and February, in addition to Rafa Benitez’s remarkable “facts” rant, saw Liverpool hand Manchester United the trophy in spectacular fashion.

This Liverpool team finished the season strongly, but the damage had already been done – some would claim by their own manager.

Liverpool 1971/72

In 1971-72, Shankly’s Liverpool team succumbed to Derby County by one point and missed out on the coveted crown.

Despite the talents of Kevin Keegan, John Toshack and Roy Evans, Liverpool were unable to catch Derby County; however, this season isn’t remembered for Liverpool’s inadequacies but rather for the manager they yielded to: Brian Clough.

Shankly and Clough’s tussles would go on to epitomise an era when splender and eminence abounded across Europe in the shape of Liverpool, Derby County and Nottingham Forest. However, it was in 1972 when one of Shankly’s best Liverpool teams lost the league by a lonesome point.

Liverpool 2013/14Liverpool teams

Despite Steven Gerrard’s numerous achievements, formidable one-man performances’ and impenetrable status as a Liverpool legend, one lamentable moment comes to mind when remembering a season defined by a blunder. We know what happened, it needs no description nor explanation; it is, what it unfortunately is.

Nonetheless, over the course of the 2013-14 Premier League season, Brenden Rodgers’ Liverpool team won 26 matches, scored in excess of 100 times, while a resurgent Daniel Sturridge and a demented Luis Suarez combined for 52 goals and 19 assists.

Ultimately, however, it wasn’t enough. Concerned about an inferior goal difference to Manchester City, Liverpool threw everything they had and more at Crystal Palace only to draw 3-3.

Manchester City finished above Liverpool by two points.

Liverpool 2018/19?

Liverpool teams

So, how does Klopp’s team compare to those Liverpool teams of yesteryear who couldn’t cross the line? Can this team do what previous Liverpool teams couldn’t do and finish top in May? We think so.

Provided Liverpool can avoid the senseless suspensions that plagued the 1996-97 team, assuming they can steer clear of any “fact” based meltdowns, and if nobody takes a tumble then maybe, just maybe, Klopp’s team can be crowned champions at the end of the season.

13 Year Old Entrepreneur Louie Smith Donates £500 to Shelter

Signature Living hotels are known for playing host to an unmissable range of events. From afternoon tea served with a twist, to unique and themed occasions, at The Shankly Hotel we’re always striving to bring Liverpool something different.

So, when Louie Smith and his Dad approached us, we were excited to find out more about what they do. Louie is just 13, but has already built a wide following of supporters. The young DJ and budding entrepreneur has accumulated almost 9,000 Instagram followers for his growing events brand ‘Forever Young’.

Forever Young Kids Raves Liverpool

The essence of Louie’s brand is to create a safe space for young people to come together and have fun. It’s no secret that children in the UK get their fair share of negative press, so Louie wanted to shed some light on the other side to the story.

Showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit, Louie set out to host kids raves for 10-14 years olds. Deciding that the events would be fully managed and professionally delivered, Louie also DJs at each event himself and invites other DJs to get involved too.

Louie gives profit from his shows to charity, with past donations going to Alder Hey. He is an ambassador for speaking out against Cyber Bullying having been victim of it himself due to the success he has had. Louie has created his own logo around ‘Speak Out’ and the hashtag #Iknowlouie to get people talking. He is also raising awareness against knife crime, another massive problem our youth are facing.

How Did it All Start?

Forever Young began with one event in a small community hall. There were only about 80 people for the first rave, growing to a couple of hundred for the next event in Sefton Park. By Christmas, tickets for the event were in such high demand that Louie and his dad, Gerard came to meet our Director and Co-Owner, Chris Shankly with hopes of securing a bigger venue.

Both Chris and Signature Living’s Founder Lawrence Kenwright loved seeing a young man in Liverpool doing something so positive and giving back to the city. Chris and Lawrence were also blown away by Louie’s talents as a DJ and his natural flair for events. The brand and event itself have taken off so quickly, with social media marketing playing a key role in spreading the word. Signature Living’s marketing and events are all managed in-house, so this is something that really resonates with ourselves as a business.

Chris and Lawrence decided to support him and offered our Garden of Eden venue for free, with our staff, team and expertise behind him. His latest event took place in Garden of Eden on 27th December, with 400 10-14 year olds in attendance. It’s safe to say that the night was a hit. Lawrence and the Signature Living team have been so impressed by him that we have now agreed to support another event on February 17th which sold out in just 1 hour!

The Cotton Street Project

We’re delighted that Louie has chosen to donate a massive £500 from his last rave to Signature Living’s Cotton Street homeless shelter. On Friday 11th January, Louie and his mum and dad came along to make the generous donation and see what the shelter is all about. Louie and his family also had the chance to meet some of our residents and hear their stories.

Lawrence opened the shelter following the closure of Kingsway House. The Cotton Street Project is a unique homeless shelter initiative. Offering an opportunity to make life-changing connections, Cotton Street is designed to bring people together. Our social recovery program provides long-term solutions, from professional health support to training workshops.

We would like to say a big thank you to Louie and his family for their support and wish him the best of luck with his next ‘Forever Young’ events. Make sure you keep an eye out for more events this year! Head over to the Forever Young Instagram page to be kept in the loop.

The Story of Liverpool’s History Through the Ages

Liverpool Football Club are one of the most decorated sporting institutions in the world having amassed 18 League Titles, 7 FA Cups, 8 League Cups and 5 European Cups in their 126 year history. They are often accused of living in the past, but what a past to live in.

Liverpool celebrate their history with enormous pride; but they never stand idle as one of the most successful stories in English Football continues to be written.

So, in order to look forward to what could be a monumental and prosperous year for the club, we’ve decided to look back at some of the most memorable moments in Liverpool’s history.

1892 – Liverpool Football Club are Born

Liverpool history

On March 15, 1892, John Houlding famously broke away from the board of Everton to form a new club and thus, Liverpool were born. And, from that day forward Liverpool played like the team they are today, beating Higher Walton 8-0 on September 3. In the wake of this tremendous trouncing Liverpool – following a match with Bury – unveiled an emblem that would become synonymous with the team forever: the Liver Bird.

Two years later Liverpool won promotion to the First Division and, just eight years later, were crowned champions; a triumph that would set the standard for future generations.

The ensuing decade would bring with it unprecedented success as Liverpool would go on to be crowned champions three more times, break the world transfer record when purchasing George Kay from Newcastle for £12,500, and yet, they were unable to win the FA Cup.

That was until Shankly arrived and changed the course of Liverpool’s history forever.

A Bastion of Invincibility

1959. A date that is forever etched in the annals of Liverpool history – on December 1, Shankly was announced as the new Liverpool manager. What would follow was nothing short of unimaginable for a team that were once mediocre at best.

Shankly would win 3 League Titles, 2 FA Cups and 1 Uefa Cup. However, it was how he went about his business that adhered him to the people who sung his name.

It is often said that those who manger Everton must get them, if that is the case, Shankly got Liverpool. Speaking to the hordes of supporters who waited to welcome the team in St George’s Square, Shankly exclaimed: “I’ve drummed it into our players time and time again that they are privileged to play for you.”

However, eras must end, and leaders must leave and, in 1974, Shankly resigned as Liverpool manager.

He would never be forgotten.

The Impossible Job

Liverpool's history

Source: Wikipedia Commons

What seemed like the impossible job, the next Liverpool icon would make it look easy. On July 26, Bob Paisley was named Liverpool manager.

Paisley built arguably the best side in Liverpool’s history winning 6 League Titles, 3 League Cups, a Uefa Cup and 3 European Cups.

It is Liverpool’s win versus Borussia Monchengladbach in Rome that is mainly remembered the fondest while Alan Kennedy’s winner against Real Madrid is remembered for just that. However, in 1978, in the midst of these two triumphs, Paisley’s Liverpool team retained the European Cup at Wembley.

Like Shankly, Paisley abdicated the Liverpool throne victorious – paving the way for one of his players to take the reins.

Arise King Kenny.

Arise Sir Kenny

Under the guidance of player-manager Kenny Dalglish Liverpool Football Club would complete a League and Cup double in 1986. He would go on to win another 8 trophy’s.

However, it is how he handled himself in the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy that adhered him to a city no longer divided by football but brought together in grief.

The 96 Liverpool supporters who sadly passed away on that day in 1989 will never be forgotten, nor will Sir Kenny Dalglish’s compassion, courage and support in the wake of such a tragic event.

In 1991, Dalglish would leave Liverpool a hero only to return in 2011 as a legend.

The Miracle of Istanbul

Liverpool's history

Source: Wikipedia Commons

The most incredible might in Liverpool’s history saw Rafael Benitez’s team add a fifth European Cup to their now bursting trophy cabinet.

3-0 down to AC Milan at half-time, Gerrard and Co fought back to win 3-2 on penalties.

The team were given a heroes welcome when they returned to Liverpool, sparking stunning scenes not seen since Shankly’s day.

A New Era

And so, what now?

Liverpool are on the cusp of greatness. No longer finding comfort in their past achievements, they are blindly looking to the future; a future teeming with silverware,

Jurgen Klopp, no matter how much he denies it, knows that he has a chance to etch his name in the annals of Liverpool folklore alongside Shankly, Paisley, Fagan, Dalglish et al.

By looking back on how previous icons secured silverware, Liverpool could win yet another title and thus, said history could repeat itself.

Why Liverpool are the Rightful Owners of The Liver Birds

It is rumoured that the Liver Birds oversee separate sections of Liverpool. One looks inwards and watches over the locals, while the second statue stares outwards and watches over the Scouse sailors.

However, it is also rumoured that the two seabirds are an argumentative couple, facing away from each other because of an ongoing dispute. It is this fable that best epitomises Everton and Liverpool’s ongoing feud: Who has the largest claim to the Liver Birds? Everton or Liverpool.

Below, we’ve put forward our argument for Liverpool Football Club.

Liverpool and The Liver Birds

Liverpool is a city of two’s: two cathedrals, two tunnels and, in 1892, two football teams. Following the formation of the club which bores the name of the city, Liverpool Football Club adopted the Liver Bird as the team’s emblem and thus, a 126-year argument ensued.

The National Field newspaper wrote on September 19, 1892 – following Liverpool’s match with Bury – “A flag floated on the old staff, bearing the letters L.F.A surmounted with the Liver. Right proudly did it wave over the field of battle and seemed to beam on its patrons with a hopeful smile.” It seems that the “beaming” seabird was a constant fixture at Anfield – much like the banners that “wave over” the Kop today.

If any doubt or confusion remained about the seabird’s owners, when Liverpool were crowned champions for the third time in 1922, a new banner was unwound with the Liver Bird brazenly tacked in the centre even more ardently than before.

This presentation seemed like a premeditated plan to claim the civic emblem as their own and, in 1950, Liverpool began to use a club badge which featured a certain domestic seabird.

The Club Crest

It was in the 1950 FA Cup Final when the Liver Bird first featured on Liverpool’s Spice Boy-esc white shirt.

The Liverpool badge has had various makeovers since then; in 1955 the monogram ‘LFC’ was added to the emblem. Then, in 1992, The Shankly Gates and the maxim “You’ll Never Walk Alone” were included. And finally, in 1993, two eternal flames were added in memory of the 96.

But, the one constant has always been the unchanged Liver Bird.

Unsuccessful Counter Arguments

In November 2008, Liverpool Football Club unsuccessfully attempted to trademark the Liver Bird.

“The Liver Bird belongs to all the people of Liverpool, [it] is a symbol of the city,” said Flo Clucas, while a man from North Liverpool argued that the seabirds were a wider symbol of Liverpool and not Liverpool Football Club.

One of the rather more unusual arguments came from Keith Wilson, an Everton shareholder who attempted to “reclaim” the Liver Birds. Keith argued that the seabirds should be on both kits “because they’re both from Liverpool.” As one could imagine, this idea didn’t go down particularly well.

It is undeniable that the Liver Birds are Liverpool’s. However, when it comes to football, the Liver Bird is synonymous with Liverpool Football Club.

The Bastion Bar & Restaurant

The Liver Bird is blazoned across the memorabilia covered walls of the unique Bastion Bar & Restaurant located within the Shankly Hotel.

Shankly’s Grandson Shares His Thoughts on Sunday’s Derby

It’s that time of year again; and I’m not talking about Christmas!

The Merseyside Derby is both my most favourite and yet most feared fixture of the season. There is often debate amongst Liverpool fans about who you would rather seal a win against, Everton or Utd but for me, it is hands down our blue brothers from over the park.

Liverpool Everton Derby

Oddly enough I grew up in an era where our record against them was actually quite poor. My school years saw me encounter game such as the one where Kanchelskis tore apart a fairly average Liverpool side that was quite a common sight in the early to mid 90’s and our record at Goodison was one not to be envied. I remember the fear Duncan Ferguson instilled in us, with every corner or set piece a lottery for a Liverpool side whose back 4 or 5 during that era left a lot to be desired. Perhaps that is what gave rise to my choice that a win against the old enemy is one which tastes sweeter than any other.

With the onset of the Houllier era of course our record in derbies began to turn, and we find ourselves in a situation now where the blue half of Merseyside now clamour for the holy grail of a derby victory. There have of course been the odd anomaly to that statement over the years achieved solely at Goodison Park. Memories of Andy Johnson terrorising us, Lee Carsley bagging winners at Gwladys Street, Cahill and Arteta turning the tables and Dan Gosling evoking the magic of the cup, but these have of course been too few and far between for Evertonians.

The wait for a Derby victory at Anfield, the sweetest of tastes for any blue is now in its 19th year and the pessimist in me says that the law of averages surely dictates a win soon? On paper this is the best Everton side I have seen; and whilst that may not necessarily have transcended onto the pitch just yet, it surely gives rise for optimism. As a Liverpool fan, Richarlison is the main worry; the lad has ability no doubt, and he is the one to watch for me. On paper however, Sigurdsson, Gomes, Digne, Bernard should all carry a threat. We are however a form team, and it is beyond debatable that we are one of the best sides in Europe, meaning we go into the game in confidence and rightly as favourites.

Merseyside Derby’s have given me some of the greatest memories of my life as a Liverpool fan. Dancing jubilantly in the Upper Bullens when Gary Mac did the unthinkable, Fernando burying Robbie Keane’s cut back from the by line and gliding pat the Gwladys Street arms outstretched, Luis Suarez doing what Luis Suarez does best, John Arne Riise running down the wing, and Steven Gerrard fulfilling the dreams of y Liverpool or Everton fan. Even Djibril Cisse got in on the act!

We wait and wonder what the latest instalment brings round this Sunday!

The Bastion Bar & Restaurant

The Shankly Hotel is home to one of the best bars in Liverpool to watch football. The Bastion Bar & Restaurant is a go-to spot for catching the action in style. The themed bar also showcases exclusive Bill Shankly memorabilia, perfect for soaking up some football history. What better venue for LFC fans?

Liverpool Gigs: Signature Sessions Returns with I See Rivers & The Tea Street Band

On Wednesday 21 November, Signature Sessions returns with another unique live music event on the rooftop of The Shankly Hotel. This month we will be welcoming Tenby- based girl band I See Rivers, alongside the amazing Tea Street Band, in what promises to be one of the best Liverpool gigs this November.

Famous for bringing the city’s latest and greatest artists together to perform for free each month, Signature Live Sessions offers music lovers an incredible evening of cinematic music all set to the backdrop of Liverpool’s iconic skyline.

Curated and presented by The Farm’s legendary Keith Mullin, we bring together Liverpool’s most influential musicians, alongside our brightest new stars.

Liverpool Gigs: I See Rivers & The Tea Street Band

Following on from the huge success of the previous month’s gig featuring China Crisis and The Vile Assembly, we are back with two more outstanding artists.

Sure to be a highlight in the Liverpool gigs line up, we are welcoming I See Rivers to the stage, followed by the Liverpool favourites, The Tea Street Band.

I See Rivers originally hail from Northern, Southern and Western Norway, however they are now based in Tenby, Wales. The trio make music that is described as “Float Folk”, taking inspiration from Fleet Foxes, Sufjan Stevens and Feist.

Their memorable melodies and far from traditional vocal harmonies make I See Rivers a unique band that sound even better live.

After a string of tours and festival appearances including Green Man Festival, Belladrum Festival and supporting Newton Faulkner on his UK tour, the band are now preparing to take to the rooftop stage in Liverpool.

After the amazing I See Rivers, a mystery headliner will be taking to the stage to end the evening on a high.  The popular local band are ready to showcase some of their best tunes and celebrate Liverpool’s ever-flourishing music scene in style.

Following I See Rivers, music lovers will be treated to an exclusive performance by one of the city’s best loved bands, The Tea Street Band. Having created a cult following over the years they’ve been together, the band’s music crosses over genres, taking inspiration from The Coral and the Happy Mondays.

Many of their hits such as, ‘Marseille Blues’ and ‘Only Love’ have become anthems across Merseyside, earning them a warm place in Scouser’s hearts. Originally formed from the ashes of much-missed rabble rousers The Maybes, The Tea Street Band have been clinically building up momentum since their first release, Push the Feeling On, playing carefully selected shows with the odd huge gigs thrown in.
