Simply Dylan: The Shankly Honours Two Great American Song Writers

This month join us for another Signature Live Event in The Garden of Eden, where we’ll be honouring two of America’s greatest songwriters; Bob Dylan and Jimmy Webb. Two iconic musicians who changed the face of music as we know it today.

Stripping back all the pomp and production of mainstream music, Dylan and Webb focused solely on the stories that their songs told and how their music made the listener feel.

Book tickets to our Signature Live Event, Simply Dylan, to see two gifted tribute acts bring to life the music and lyrics that made Dylan and Webb icons of our time.

The Artists

On Thursday 29th August, Signature Live Events will be hosting an event inviting dreamers, rock n rollers and those who simply love great music to witness three fabulous acts taking to the stage, doing what they do best.

Simply Dylan

John O’Connell is a name that is known on Liverpool’s live music scene along with his carefully selected band, Simply Dylan. The group are hailed as the greatest Dylan tribute act and a must-see show for everyone who identifies as a Bob Dylan fan.

“…they (Simply Dylan) marry the extraordinary range and beauty of Dylan’s lyrics with a joyous, exuberant, celebratory sound.” Alan Bleasdale, Playwright

Simply Dylan simply resurrects the wonderful words and stripped back beauty of Bob Dylan’s work, and perform it live for audiences who haven’t been lucky enough to have seen the man himself on stage. What’s more, they do so with an air of effortlessness, something that Dylan himself applied to his own live appearances, focusing more on the words and music and less on aesthetics.

Tom Spence

An incredibly talented artist, leading an exceptional band of musicians, Tom Spence will be recreating the genius of Jimmy Webb, live on stage this Friday 29th August. Showcasing some of the songwriter’s greatest work, Tom Spence and his band, directed by Barney Taylor will put on a breath-taking live performance of classic American songs that are known all over the world

Webb wrote lyrics and music for the greats and counts Johnny Cash and Joe Cocker among his collaborators. Today he remains the only artist to have won Granny’s for his music, lyrics and orchestration and is hailed a genius among geniuses amidst his contemporaries.

“one of the most innovative and musically proficient songwriters of our generation” Billy Joel

Of his own work in music Webb says;

“I like words. I like the way they clash around together and bang up against each other, especially in songs.” Jimmy Webb

Be sure not to miss your chance to see such genius brought to life, at Simply Dylan with Signature Live Events.

The Coral DJ set

The local lads who first formed over the water in 1996, have been a massive influence over indie/rock music for decades now.

13 Year Old Entrepreneur Louie Smith Donates £500 to Shelter

Signature Living hotels are known for playing host to an unmissable range of events. From afternoon tea served with a twist, to unique and themed occasions, at The Shankly Hotel we’re always striving to bring Liverpool something different.

So, when Louie Smith and his Dad approached us, we were excited to find out more about what they do. Louie is just 13, but has already built a wide following of supporters. The young DJ and budding entrepreneur has accumulated almost 9,000 Instagram followers for his growing events brand ‘Forever Young’.

Forever Young Kids Raves Liverpool

The essence of Louie’s brand is to create a safe space for young people to come together and have fun. It’s no secret that children in the UK get their fair share of negative press, so Louie wanted to shed some light on the other side to the story.

Showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit, Louie set out to host kids raves for 10-14 years olds. Deciding that the events would be fully managed and professionally delivered, Louie also DJs at each event himself and invites other DJs to get involved too.

Louie gives profit from his shows to charity, with past donations going to Alder Hey. He is an ambassador for speaking out against Cyber Bullying having been victim of it himself due to the success he has had. Louie has created his own logo around ‘Speak Out’ and the hashtag #Iknowlouie to get people talking. He is also raising awareness against knife crime, another massive problem our youth are facing.

How Did it All Start?

Forever Young began with one event in a small community hall. There were only about 80 people for the first rave, growing to a couple of hundred for the next event in Sefton Park. By Christmas, tickets for the event were in such high demand that Louie and his dad, Gerard came to meet our Director and Co-Owner, Chris Shankly with hopes of securing a bigger venue.

Both Chris and Signature Living’s Founder Lawrence Kenwright loved seeing a young man in Liverpool doing something so positive and giving back to the city. Chris and Lawrence were also blown away by Louie’s talents as a DJ and his natural flair for events. The brand and event itself have taken off so quickly, with social media marketing playing a key role in spreading the word. Signature Living’s marketing and events are all managed in-house, so this is something that really resonates with ourselves as a business.

Chris and Lawrence decided to support him and offered our Garden of Eden venue for free, with our staff, team and expertise behind him. His latest event took place in Garden of Eden on 27th December, with 400 10-14 year olds in attendance. It’s safe to say that the night was a hit. Lawrence and the Signature Living team have been so impressed by him that we have now agreed to support another event on February 17th which sold out in just 1 hour!

The Cotton Street Project

We’re delighted that Louie has chosen to donate a massive £500 from his last rave to Signature Living’s Cotton Street homeless shelter. On Friday 11th January, Louie and his mum and dad came along to make the generous donation and see what the shelter is all about. Louie and his family also had the chance to meet some of our residents and hear their stories.

Lawrence opened the shelter following the closure of Kingsway House. The Cotton Street Project is a unique homeless shelter initiative. Offering an opportunity to make life-changing connections, Cotton Street is designed to bring people together. Our social recovery program provides long-term solutions, from professional health support to training workshops.

We would like to say a big thank you to Louie and his family for their support and wish him the best of luck with his next ‘Forever Young’ events. Make sure you keep an eye out for more events this year! Head over to the Forever Young Instagram page to be kept in the loop.

Arguably one of the biggest and most exciting motor sport events to ever visit the UK, the Red Bull Drift Shifters are officially coming to Liverpool this month. Red Bull will be bringing the world’s best drifters to the city on Sunday 19th August to showcase their incredible skills as they rip through the streets and whizz past the cheering crowds, along Liverpool’s iconic waterfront.

Each of the twelve talented drivers will be testing their nerve and precision as they navigate and manoeuvre a custom track through the streets of Liverpool, rigged with advanced proximity and speed sensors. Thousands are expected to flock to the Waterfront to witness this once in a lifetime event and catch a glimpse of the famous Red Bull Drift Shifters.

If you’re planning on visiting the city for this showstopping event, book a stay with us at The Shankly Hotel and enjoy utter luxury, just a stone’s throw away from all the action.

The Red Bull Drift Shifters

Every car you see at this spectacular event harnesses up to 1000 horsepower and is driven by the world’s very best drivers from across the globe. As they circumnavigate this tricky course, cars will score points for the speed, angle and proximity to obstacles that will be dotted about the track. And of course, the closer, the better.

Originally dreamt up by New Zealand professional drifter ‘Mad’ Mike Whiddett, this amazing event was first debuted in his home own of Auckland back in 2012. For the first time, this captivating event is travelling to Liverpool and it promises to be one of the most jaw dropping showcases the city has ever seen.

In a recent interview, Mike Whiddett expressed his excitement at the event coming to Merseyside: “It’s an amazing venue; it’s near twice the size of the last two Red Bull Drift Shifters events and it’s got this big D-shape roundabout, so we’re really excited to be able to get out and showcase the precision driving of drifting in the UK in such a massive environment. The venue also appears in a Fast and Furious movie, so yeah, it’s really cool – I can’t wait to execute it.”

If you’d like to experience this adrenaline-fuelled event that will test nerves to the max and wow with precision driving like never seen before in the UK, get your tickets!
