I lived about 1 mile from Liverpool’s training ground as I grew up in the late 60’s and early 70’s. I would spend my spare time hanging around Melwood, looking through the cracks in the walls to catch a glimpse of my idols.
One year, I think it was 1973, my secondary school, West Derby Comprehensive was having problems with ceilings. This meant the school was reduced to half days only. When I was not in school I was able to get to Melwood when all other school children were in school. The difference was that the ground staff at Melwood didn’t lock the gates and I could wander in and watch the first team training without a problem.
This particular day I was feeling confident enough to go and sit on the veranda of the weights room. There were 3 or 4 benches and as I sat comfortably watching the 1st team training Bill Shankly walks out and sits next to me.
I cannot believe I am sitting watching Liverpool’s first team training with the great man sitting next to me. He looks at me and says with that great Scottish accent, ”Why are you here son, should you not be in school?”
I then tell him that there are problems with the school building and that the school is falling down. Quick as a flash Shanks replied ”Ah, it’s like Goodison Park.” I just burst out laughing. What a moment to share with a legend. I will never forget it. Would it be possible nowadays to sit with the Liverpool manager on a bench watching the Liverpool first team training, no chance? How lucky was I?
