Roy Lindo

After heavy snow we were due to play Sunderland. I think it was 29th December 1964 and the club appealed for volunteers to clear the snow from the terraces. I went up with my cousin and we started clearing the paddock then some of the Annie Road end.

While we were doing this Shanks was working on the pitch with a rake and he asked us up onto the pitch to help him. After that I always boasted to all and sundry that I once worked on the pitch with him. I told the story over and over again.

Years later when I was in hospital and recovering from an operation on my bladder to remove a small cancerous tumour; my brother in law walks in with the book; 100 photos of Shankly. To my surprise there is a photo of me and Shanks on the pitch clearing the snow. What a boost to me! I had never seen any photos of it before and to be honest there was a tear in my eye and I started showing my fellow patients and the staff. I now have the pictures on the wall at home.
