Jenny Carline (Granddaughter)

A favourite memory I have of Grandy is how he had time for everyone. We would often go round of a weekend to see him and Nanny Nessie. He would sit me on his knee and always had time for playing with us. He used to sneak brown bread triangles to our Claire as the youngest but I remember as one of the older grandchildren he would sneak me a few of Nanny’s Continental Chocolates.

I vividly remember how we used to get frequent knocks at the door. Grandy would always have his red tracksuit on and would go to see who it was, and most of the time it was fans wanting to catch a glimpse of him or speak to him. He would always find time to discuss the game with them and never once do I remember him turning anyone away or not going to speak to any of them. That said; he always came back to us and finished playing with us when he was done. On some occasions, he even invited people in!

He and Nanny used to drink this Brazilian tea, called Yerbhama or something or other. It was really sweet tasting and we would finish the day with a cup of it. We used to call it Nanny’s tea as we couldn’t pronounce it. Amazing times for us as kids.
