My husband has been a lifelong Liverpool supporter and considers Bill Shankly to be the best football manager there ever was. Shanks is part of so many fantastic childhood memories for him so just thought we’d share this one with you.
So it’s 1976 and Dave was 14yrs old he was given the task of doing a school project on the subject of his choice there was only one choice BILL SHANKLY. He sent a letter to Mr Shankly’s home at 30 Bellefield Avenue asking if there was any chance of visiting him at home to talk about Liverpool FC and all things football for his school project and then he waited for a reply.
Just before Christmas 1976 that reply arrived. In a brown envelope there was a hand written letter and in the right hand corner embossed in red it said MR&MRS WILLIAM SHANKLY 30 BELLEFIELD AVENUE L/POOL 12.
The letter said to Dave; come and see me any time ‘and was signed by Bill . Once he had that letter he couldn’t wait so off he went to meet Bill at his home taking with him a list of questions and a programme from Bill’s testimonial that he wanted Bill to autograph. When he arrived he knocked on the front door and Mrs shankly opened it and said come in son; he’s in there go on in.
In the living room sitting there was Bill SHANKLY. “Come in lad,” he said. He was wearing his slippers and a bright orange shirt and in the living room there was a large gold football on a mount some; kind of football trophy? Mrs Shankly came in with cups of tea, cakes and biscuits and he was told to tuck in . After tea they discussed football and Bill answered the questions from his list; one being who did he think would win the FA Cup? Bill said, “Oh Southampton will win it.”(he was right) He then autographed the programme he’d brought and a picture of Bill with the FA Cup in 1974 . When it was time to go; Bill showed him to the door and said, “Don’t forget lad come and see me any time.” A truly nice man, a gentleman, a legend and a day he will never forget. We recently had the letter, programme and picture mounted and framed and its proudly displayed in our home.
