Coming to the beautiful St Johns gardens outside St Georges Hall is a hot event you don’t want to miss this Easter weekend; The Feast of Fire.
Ten years ago the organisers of Feast of Fire helped open and close the celebrations for Liverpool Capital of Culture and now the city has invited them back to celebrate 10 years after being awarded the honourable title.
Taking place over two weekends the Feast of Fire begins this weekend, the 23rd of March and ends Easter Bank Holiday Monday. There are early evening sessions for families until 19:30 pm and later sessions for adults only after 20:30 pm.
The Feast of Fire will be considered Liverpool’s latest mini-festival and will include live music, flaming art installations and fabulous food and drink.
Here’s our guide for what to expect at the Feast of Fire 2018.
Inspired by European tradition the Feast of Fire is a celebration of the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
For centuries Catholic churches have been known to extinguish all the lights that burned in the church throughout the dark winters and light fires to welcome spring. An Easter candle is then lit and used to relight all the extinguished lights in the church bringing in a new season.
In Germany tradition tells of bonfires being lit in villages and residents bringing wood from home to partially burn in the communal fire. The charred wood is then taken home and used in the family fire, the process was said to ward of home fires and poor weather in spring.
This year Liverpool will begin what is hopefully an annual tradition by bringing the Feast of Fire to the city over Easter Weekend.
As well as being a feast for the eyes, the Feast of Fire will also be showcasing a selection of live acts providing an array of music throughout both weekends.
Liverpool SoulFest will be kicking things off on the 23rd inviting people to warm their hearts and celebrate the soul of the cities music. Other live performances include Chinese artists at Pagoda Arts, African Heat from the Oye Festival and The Fire of India full of music and dance from the Indian Arts Trust Milapfest.
Each day has been given a different theme and individual groups will arrange live music, performances and art installations to reflect their message or culture;
Celebrations from a variety of cultures and from countries across the globe will come together to form one huge Feast of Fire and the city is invited.
Following the theme of fire and flames, there will be some superb food and drink on offer either inspired by fire or made using the naked flame.
Oregano Kitchen will be providing delicious pizzas baked in searing hot clay ovens. Chose your topping and watch as your creation sizzles away in the open oven right in front of your eyes.
Sweet options and desserts come toasted too as Treaty Pie take their love of cakes, cookies and shakes and waffles and give them the fiery treatment. Think smore’s hot off the oven, toasted marshmallows and Freakshakes topped with sparklers.
It wouldn’t be a real Feast of Fire without something fresh from the grill and BBQ sensations Love from the Streets will be putting on a sizzling hot show demonstrating to others how its done in time for the summer BBQ season.
These heart-warming delicious dishes are the perfect compliments to the Feast of Fire and its other fabulous displays and entertaining acts.
Drinks are in hot pursuit following a fiery theme with flaming cocktails such as the Forge. Made from Jameson’s, smoked apple, cinnamon and ginger all served in a metal cup. Or our favourite winter drink given a fiery twist, Mulled wine spiked with a healthy helping of Beefeater Gin.
Both are sure to warm your cockles.
