And don’t take our word for it: Kíla have previously collaborated with U2, The Dubliners and Sinead O’Connor.

7pm, 19 Oct, Arts Club (Seel St) – Tickets, £21.50

Set in New York City, but filmed mainly in California, the TV show FAME was based on the hit movie of the same name.

The cast of talented individuals learned to sing, dance and act throughout the six series that aired between 1982 – 1987, after which man of the actors disappeared into obscurity only to resurface later on in Bring Back . . . FAME in 2008.

Audiences loved everything about FAME, from the funky fashion to the daring dance moves and sensational storylines that explored real-life issues. From the TV show, 5 soundtracks were sold giving people the chance to dance and sing to all the hit songs from the show at their leisure.

This was an American TV teen drama that would be today’s equivalent to Gossip Girl or Scream Queen’s, taking a look at the inner workings of education in America, something which is still a present-day interest for young people everywhere.

A Brief History of Liverpool and the Champions League

It’s been 34 years since these two teams last faced off against each other at finals level, in the last match of the 1984 Champions League in Rome. Liverpool, of course, came out on top and to keep the club in with a chance at the finals they need a repeat of the success they saw in the early eighties.

We’ve taken a quick look back at Liverpool’s history with the Champions League, and if the past is anything to go by the future looks rosy for The Red’s as they come up against old foes from over the water.

1977 – Liverpool vs Borussia Mönchengladbach

Final Score: 3-1

Ground: Stadio Olimpico

Liverpool vs Borussia Mönchengladbach - Champions League 1977

source: The Anfield Wrap

When these two finalists came together their journeys couldn’t have been more different. Liverpool’s wins had come to the team fairly easily, with one or two close calls, Borussia Mönchengladbach, on the other hand, had just scraped through. The ’77  final game took place in Rome only four days after Liverpool had lost the FA Cup to Manchester United at Wembley.

Liverpool’s win against Borussia Mönchengladbach was the first time the club became European Champions and gave them the chance to play for the Super Cup which they also won this year.

Had it not been for Manchester United, Liverpool would have been the first team to win a Treble, a feat that United achieved themselves 22 years later.

1978 – Liverpool vs Club Brugge

Final Score: 1-0

Ground: Wembley

Returning to the competition as reigning champions, Liverpool faced off against first-timers Club Brugge, a team they had defeated in the UEFA Cup Final in ’76.

The final match at Wembley was goalless for the first half and Liverpool’s Kenny Dalglish scored the one and only goal of the game in the second half. A goal that became known as one of the greatest in the history of football.

Liverpool won the game 1-0 and became the first team in history to retain the European champs title but sadly lost the Super Cup this year to another Belgian team Anderlecht.

1981 – Liverpool vs Real Madrid

Final Score: 1-0

Ground: Parc des Prince

Liverpool vs Real Madrid - Champions League 1981

source: The Independent

Liverpool faced off in their third final against previous six-time winners, Real Madrid. With both teams most prominent players facing injury time, the results could not be predicted.

A goalless game was changed in the 81st minute when Alan Kennedy found the back of the net, the lead was held until the final whistle and Liverpool won their third European Cup and became the very first British club to do so.

Manager Bob Paisley also became the first manager to win three consecutive European cups with one team.

One goal secured Liverpool and manager Paisley’s third European Cup.

1984 – Liverpool vs Roma

Final Score: 5-1

Grounds: Stadio Olimpico

The fourth European cup final match for Liverpool and only the first for Roma, Liverpool were seasoned European Champions by this point.

Both teams had faced off other teams for the chance to appear in the final and even though Liverpool’s journey was comfortable there were struggles for Roma and a rumour that the team bribed the referee in the semi-finals against Dundee United.

Despite Liverpool’s past performances, Roma were the favourites to win and they put up a good fight holding 1-1 score from the first half through to full and extra time.

The finals of ’84 ended in a penalty shoot-out which Liverpool won 4-2, earning them their first Treble for the season and the match that Bruce Grobbelaar perfected the famous “Grobbelaar Legs”.

2005 – Liverpool vs Milan

Final Score: 6-5 (penalties)

Ground: Atatürk Stadium

Liverpool vs Milan Champions League 2005

source: Wikicommons

Off to a rocky start in 2005 Liverpool barely scraped through into the knock out rounds of the 2004/5 Champions League.

After seeing off European competition in the knock out stages, Liverpool faced Chelsea in the semi-finals and scored what was dubbed as a “ghost goal” by Chelsea manager José Mourinho, a goal which gave Liverpool the 1-0 lead which they held to take them through to their sixth finals match.

They would be facing six-time European Cup Champions Milan, who were favourites to win and were quickly leading the match at 3-0 before halftime.

Liverpool pulled off one of their extraordinary comebacks in this all-important match-up and went onto score 3 goals in under six minutes.

The three all tie took the teams to penalties where Liverpool triumphed thanks to a save from goalkeeper Dudek against talented striker Shevchenko.

Liverpool vs Milan Champions League 2005

Dudek winning save Shevchenko penalty

The game was nicknamed “The Miracle of Istanbul” and stays strong in the memory of many Reds fans to date as one of the best matches they’ve ever witnessed and because this was the 5th time Liverpool had won the Champions League, Liverpool can now keep the trophy.

We Were the Champions

After all this success Liverpool scraped into the Champions League in 2005 and was defeated in the knockout rounds. They went on to face Milan again in 2006/7 finals but lost.

Old opponents Chelsea took Liverpool out of the running in both 2008 and 2009 and then in 2010 Liverpool failed to qualify for European competition in for the first time since 1999.

It wasn’t until 2015/16 that the team managed to get back on top and reached the semi-finals against Villarreal. The match was another amazing comeback game that saw Liverpool fight back from 1-0 down to a win of 3-1 on aggregate. After this win, Liverpool had once again made it into the final and went up against Sevilla at St. Jakob-Park in Basel and but lost 3-1.

Back in the Semi-finals 2018

Facing off against an old foe can Liverpool overcome Roma like they did in ’84?

It seems the fans of Roma have not forgotten the past and are itching to face The Reds on the 24th of April in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The first leg takes place in Anfield with the second following up eight days later at Stadio Olimpico where Roma faced defeat in the finals of the 1984 European Cup match over 30 years ago.

Fingers crossed for a victory against the Italian side and predictions are already in that Liverpool will be coming up against Real Madrid in the finals.

Let’s hope things go Liverpool’s way against Roma to be in with a chance of reliving the same success as they did in the eighties.

Keep your eyes peeled for all of The Shankly Hotel’s Champion League offers and make sure you’ve got great seats in the Bastion Bar & Restaurant for all the up and coming Champions League matches.

The Man Behind the Gloves

Although Fury was born in the outskirts of Manchester, his family all hail from Ireland and Northern Ireland. With Irish Traveller heritage, he has been dubbed The Gypsy King in the ring, a nickname he styled himself in homage to the ‘self-style King of the Gypsies”, Bartley Gorman, whom Fury is a distant relative.

His family has deep roots in the boxing community, with his father competing as a bare-knuckle fighter and unlicensed boxer and then as a professional boxer in the 1980’s and his cousins being frequent champions on the boxing circuit.

His boxing career began in the amateur ring, where he represented both Ireland and England and showed outstanding promise for a future career. He was crowned number three in the world in 2007 but still narrowly missed out on joining the 2008 Olympic Team, a knockback that spurred Fury on to turn professional.

His professional career boasts an unbeaten record of 25 wins to 0 losses against some of the world’s leading sportsmen, with many significant matches being fought around the world. His last fight, and arguably the most notable, was against Wladimir Klitschko, a two-time world heavyweight champion.

Hear all about Tyson Fury’s exciting career at The Shankly Hotel on Saturday 30th March and gain an insight into the man that paved the way for a new era of boxing. With the promise of a truthful and raw account of life in the ring, the best way to hear about the man behind the gloves is a ticket to An Evening with Tyson fury.
