Terminally Ill Gran to Meet Roy Evans at The Shankly Hotel

Posted on 07.09.2016

A dream come true

Marie Wright, a 67-year-old Irish gran, has always dreamed of watching LFC at Anfield. Unfortunately, Marie was recently diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, given just weeks to live in February 2016, which is why the kind-hearted fans from Irish Reds Club and Dublin 15 LFC supporters groups in Dublin have decided to make her dreams come true by taking her to a game. Not only did the groups arrange wheelchair access at Anfield and a carer for Marie, but they recently contacted The Shankly Hotel Director and Bill Shankly’s grandson, Chris Shankly Carline, who was more than happy to make her visit to Liverpool extra special.

Marie recently commented:

“I couldn’t believe it when we managed to get tickets for the match and the support we’ve received ever since has just been amazing. When the appeal was first set up, I thought this was the kind of thing that happens to other people, but it’s just grand how people have reacted.”

Meeting a legend

Touched by the story, Chris has arranged for Marie to visit our Liverpool hotel ahead of LFC’s first home game against Leicester City on 10th September. Both Marie and her family will join our hotel to meet none other than LFC legend Roy Evans, who was a former football player before he became the team’s manager in the 1990s.

Roy is hosting the Shankly Hotel’s Bastion Match Day Experience on the day, so was more than happy to take the time to chat with Marie about LFC. In addition to meeting Roy, Marie will have an opportunity to browse the previously unseen Bill Shankly memorabilia on display at The Shankly Hotel.

Chris Shankly Carline recently commented: “I’m really happy The Shankly Hotel can add to Marie’s experience of visiting Liverpool and Anfield, which is due to the generosity of the Irish Reds’ fans. We look forward to meeting Marie and hope she and her family have a brilliant time both at the hotel and watching LFC in action.”
